60% achieved grade A or B for Detritus (44 streets)

32 Streets were surveyed during Qtr 2.

91% of streets achieved grade A or B for litter. (29 streets)

66% of streets achieved grade A or B for detritus (21 streets).

Gradual improvements are evident during Qtr 2.

Overall decline is due to:

  • backlog of work due to the impact of pandemic – reduced service provision for 18 months

  • redeployment of staff to help deliver critical Waste & Recycling services

  • unable to appoint new staff to all vacancies within the team including sweeper driver

  • issues with performance of weed-spraying contractor

  • increase in the amount of fly-tipping throughout the district

  • increase in the amount of household waste deposited in litter bins

Interventions in the last 3 months and evaluation of impact

  • Prioritising of litter bin routes to ensure bins in areas with high footfall are emptied at least twice a week

  • Targeted clean-up project on the Oak Tree estate following on from the Tidy Together campaign has paved the way for similar action weeks in hot-spot areas

  • Monitoring of effectiveness and application of herbicide by the contractor followed up with remedial visit and spot spraying, however the results have been extremely patchy

  • Advice sort from Legal and processed commenced to terminate existing weed-spraying contract

  • Parks staff have supported Street Cleansing teams by spraying and manually grubbing out weeds in targeted and hot-spot areas

  • Support to community litter-picks

  • Installation of new/bigger litter bins in some areas

  • 2 new starters appointed from previous recruitment round are now up to speed

  • Further recruitment round is underway to appoint 5 cleansing operatives including 2 sweeper drivers. CVs will now be accepted and job adverts have been placed with the wider jobs e.g. indeed, monster and other social media and online platforms
