Coin Investigation

I. Problem: Which side of a penny, the heads side or the tails side, will hold the greatest number of water drops without rolling off?

II. Hypothesis:

III. Materials:

  1. penny

  2. beaker

  3. water

  4. paper towel

  5. eye dropper

  6. calculator

IV. Procedure:

  1. Place a penny head side up on your table.

  2. Fill the eye dropper full with water from the beaker.

  3. Hold the eye dropper about one inch above the penny. Slowly and gently start putting drops of water on the head side of the penny.

  4. Occasionally look at the side of the penny as you drop water on it. Watch the water build up.

  5. Continue putting drops of water on the penny until the water runs off of the edge.

  6. In the data chart, record how many drops of water fit on the penny.

  7. Use the paper towel to dry the penny. Repeat steps 1 – 6 two more times.

  8. Average the three trials for the head side of the penny and record in the data section.

  9. Repeat steps 1 – 8 for the tails side of the penny.

V. Data:

HEAD SIDE AVERAGE = _________ TAILS SIDE AVERAGE = _______

  1. Which side of the penny held the most water? Why do you think this is true?

  1. Trials number one, two, and three for the heads side often have different numbers of drops. Why are they not always the same?

  1. Create a bar graph of the three trials for the heads and tails side of the penny

VI. Conclusion:

The hypothesis that _____________________________________

__________________________________________________________(fill in with your hypothesis) was proven ________________ (correct / incorrect) because ______________________________________________________
