The Faculty Research Grant Program provides Administrative Faculty and Teaching Faculty with the opportunity and financial or in kind resources to explore areas related to the mission of the university and the improvement of instruction for its students. The following procedures are intended to provide guidance to the University and its faculty for implementation of the process for awarding grants for faculty research and scholarship.

  1. Grant Selection, Award and Management: Development and implementation of the faculty grant process is a responsibility of the Faculty Standards and Development Standing Committee (FSDC) of the Academic Affairs Council (AAC) in consultation with the office of the Provost. Final approval of all grants shall be made by the Provost. Applicants must be appointed by CityU as full or part time faculty members or teaching faculty who are expected to teach during the academic year of the award, or who have been awarded a sabbatical. Faculty from CityU partner institutions, who are not teaching CityU courses, are eligible as collaborators on a grant, but may not be a primary grant recipient.

When funds are available, a Request for Proposals (RFP) will be published. The RFP will contain information regarding the amount of awards, the timelines for application and completion of grant activities, suggested research topics aligned with the Academic Model and instructions for application.

Preliminary review of grant applications and the subsequent supervision of awarded grants is the responsibility of an applicant’s primary supervisor or designee.

  1. Research Priorities: The University identifies as research priorities those activities which align with the practitioner faculty focus of the University and which lend themselves to applied research and improved pedagogy. These priorities include a focus on quality teaching and student learning; the development of academic theories underlying professional practice; the improvement of professional development programs for academic faculty; outcomes assessment; the advancement of service learning and improved practicums/internships; and the development of diverse and global perspectives around which the international context of the university can be utilized.

Additionally, in consultation with the AAC and Provost, the FSDC will annually prepare an RFP that identifies specific research and development topics for proposal to faculty as part of the RFP.

  1. Criteria for evaluation of proposals: The FSDC and/or Provost may utilize the following criteria to review applications. All grant applications shall also be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and by the Business Office prior to final approval to determine if there are related fiscal implications or liabilities for the university. For grants that involve human participants those proposals must be approved by the Institutional Review Board.

  1. Funding: The FSDC will annually recommend the budget for faculty grants to the AAC and the Provost along with recommended research priorities of interest to the university.

Research grant funding is only available through the academic year covered by the RFP. Multi-year projects may be submitted but subsequent funding is not guaranteed. Funding for awarded projects shall be distributed on a timeline identified by the FSDC for each project. Funding may be requested in the proposal to meet the following needs:

  1. Dissemination: Dissemination within the City University community will be expected for approved projects. The proposal shall identify expected dissemination activities, recognizing that those may evolve over time. Internal and external dissemination shall be in alignment with University Policy on Intellectual Property.

Scope: This procedure applies to Administrative Faculty and Teaching Faculty at City University of Seattle.
