Areas of Study

This is an entry-level course. This course is for students who have not taken foreign language previously. Grade 7 French is equivalent to the first half of high school level 1 French.

This course is intended as a first experience in the target language and prepares students to meet the NYS Education Department’s Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Checkpoint A proficiency level. Students learn to speak and understand the language using basic vocabulary within the context of everyday situations, use grammatical structures within the context of topics, and work with vocabulary lists, original dialogues, notes and letters related to the topics.


Study the language through four major activities:

  • Listening

  • Speaking

  • Reading

  • Writing


Topics will include but not be limited to:

  • Personal Identification – name, age, address,

nationality, telephone number, place of birth

  • Family - members, activities, responsibilities

  • House and Home - rooms, chores, types of lodging

furnishing, appliances

  • Leisure - sports, pass time, after school, weekends, holidays, vacation

  • Education- classes, time, schedule, report card, grading, teachers, school activities


Grammar includes:

  • er, ir, re verbs

  • subject pronouns

  • irregular verbs - être, avoir, aller, faire, prendre

  • possessive adjectives

  • adjective agreement

  • negatives

  • interrogatives

  • prepositions

  • indefinite articles

  • definite articles

  • negative with the indefinite article

  • partitive

  • numbers 0-1000

  • alphabet, spelling, accents, pronunciation

  • telling time

  • demonstrative adjectives

  • future immediate

  • days of the week, months of the year date
