SBE Invitation to Regional Discussions - Public Notices (CA State Board of Education)

January 11, 2008

Dear State Board of Education Subscriber:

RE: Public Meetings Regarding Corrective Action Plans under No Child Left Behind

I want to personally invite you to a public discussion that members of the State Board of Education will be hosting next week regarding the Board’s requirement to adopt corrective actions for the 98 school districts that are in year three of NCLB Program Improvement. Board member Ken Noonan and I will host these public discussions. The purpose is to enable members of the State Board of Education to hear from school districts and their communities regarding the framework for corrective actions under No Child Left Behind and its potential impact on them.

The meetings will be held at three California locations next week, and the general public may also attend. The times and locations are as follows:

National Hispanic University

14271 Story Road

San Jose, CA 95127

Kern County Superintendent of Schools

1300 17th Street

Bakersfield, CA 93301

Los Angeles County Office of Education

Los Angeles County Education Center
9300 Imperial Highway
Downey, CA 90242-2890

This is one step in a series of conversations we are having on this topic. We recognize that we are holding these discussions on short notice. There will be additional opportunities for public input before the Board takes action on this matter. The Board office will keep the public and subscribers informed through our traditional public notice prior to Board action.

We appreciate the public interest we have received in this topic thus far. The State Board recognizes how important this is for California’s school districts, and we look forward to on-going dialogue with you over the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Ted Mitchell

President, California State Board of Education

cc: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Secretary of Education David Long

Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell
