MAINTENANCE PLAN

Artist:

Hawkeye Glenn & Lizzie Martinez

Title or subject: formation, language, memory –

A courtyard for the Susanna Dickinson Museum and the

O. Henry Museum

Medium:

Stone and steel

Installation location:

5th and Neches

Materials and Technique

Description of materials and technique:

  1. Principal materials used in fabrication:

Sunset red granite, Lueders limestone, steel.

  1. Other materials used (such as screws, nails, glue, armatures, etc.):

Stainless steel connector pins, steel rivets, PVC drainage pipe, weed barrier drainage fabric, 3M epoxy, sand, clean crushed stone.

  1. Equipment used in construction:

Rock saw, telescoping sky track, welder, grinder, generator.

  1. Final surface/patina material and technique (technique, product brand name, vendor):

N/A

I would like for Hawkeye to comment on the eventual patina of the planters. I want this to be stated so that there is an understanding of what the expected patina for the planters would be. I would like to avoid comments regarding the ‘rusting’ of the planters and the eventual phone calls regarding maintenance.

  1. Final protective coating product(s) (application method and number of coats, product brand name, vendor):

Text on stones is painted with Lithichrome black paint. Estimated duration =10 years.

Stone text paint should be reapplied as needed by a professional.

O. Henry stone coated in Primapel sealant. Nearing the end of 1 year warranty a Rilem tube test will be performed on this stone. If Primapel is sufficiently worn away, R7 product from Cathedral Stone Products (see contact information with recommended cleaning products) will be applied. This is a more appropriate product for this type of stone in this type of horizontal position.

Steel planters coated with solution equal parts Johnson’s Paste wax, linseed oil (Sunnyside Corporation), turpentine. Steel planter outer coating should be re-applied once a year in summer when metal is warm. Brush with steel wool to clean off any flaking then re-apply with soft cloth. Let dry then re-apply. (two coats).

Interior of stone planters coated with Henry’s 109 asphalt emulsion.

Braille on steel planter is painted with Sherwin Williams Industrial & Marine Coatings Alkyd Primer (B50 WZI) #6401-15325 and Rust-Oleum Enamel oil based paint (color: Aluminun 7715).

  1. How is work illuminated (i.e., type of light, lumens and wattage, brand name, vendor; fixtures type, brand name and vendor):

N/A

External Factors

Describe any environmental factors which may affect the condition of the artwork and any precautionary measures which should be taken. (e.g., direct sunlight, extremes of annual rain or snowfall, temperature, humidity, acidity of rainfall, flooding, wind, vibrations, air pollutants, vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic, animal interaction with artwork (potential for nesting, droppings, etc.); human interaction with artwork (touching, sitting, climbing, vandalism):

Bird droppings from the live oak tree, gum on stones, vandalism (spray paint on planters – tagging), chipping of stone text caused by placement of furniture, soil erosion of berm if not planted with sedge or native grasses. This comment does not pertain to the maintenance of the courtyard and the original plans provided by the artist did not include planting of the/a berm area.

Desired Appearance:

  1. Describe in specific terms and, if necessary, with drawings or photographs, the physical qualities for which the agency should strive in order to maintain the artist’s intent. (e.g. matte rather than glossy luster, color of patina):

The site should be clean and free of debris. Bird droppings should be sprayed off regularly. Engraved stones should NOT have furniture placed on top of them – to prevent chipping. Steel planters should be oiled annually according to specifications. Berm on west end of terminating steps/ledges should be planted with sedge or other native grass. No paint should be applied to stones or planters at any time. This comment does not pertain to the maintenance of the courtyard and the original plans provided by the artist did not include planting of the/a berm area.

No paving stones or sidewalk in Brush Square Park should extend directly from artists work. Suggested: Contact artists when design planning phase begins for Brush Square Park. The eventual design of the remaining courtyard includes extending walkways to the courtyard. We anticipate that the artist will participate in the layout of these walkways so that they do not detract from the quality and integrity of the art piece.

  1. What may be acceptable alteration in form, surface, texture, coloration as related to natural aging of materials?

Steel will rust over many years. After perhaps 10 years, the stone text will need to be re-painted and the stones re-sealed. (See above products).

PARD discussed adding side lighting to the ledges at some point – this would be an acceptable alteration to the artists.

  1. If the work is site-specific, describe in detail the particular relationship of the work to its site, including any significant physical aspects of the site which, if altered, would significantly alter the intended meaning and/or appearance of the work:

Altering the live oak in any way would be detrimental to the piece as a whole. Painting any of the stone or planters would be detrimental.

Maintenance/Conservation Instructions

Provide detailed instructions regarding the methods and frequency of maintenance for the artwork (with observations regarding permanency/durability of materials and techniques)

  1. Routine maintenance (e.g., removal of dust, dirt; maintenance of protective surfaces; tightening, adjusting, oiling, etc.)

a. Stone maintenance – The stone slabs range in thickness from 2-4 inches and are designed for permanence. Issues that might arise on the stones’ surface are gum, grafitti and stickers. For gum and stickers, carefully scrape as much as possible off using a dull tool – take care not to scratch the surface below. Remove residue with mineral spirits or naphtha on a cloth or cotton swabs. For graffiti, pressure washing can be used, washing at 800-1000 psi or using graffiti removal gel such as MasonRe 307 graffiti remover by Cathedral Stone (which is environmentally safe and biodegradable). Take care not to pressure wash between the cracks of the stones as this will diminish beneficial sand bed.

If the foundation of the stones shifts dramatically and the stones become out of plane, chisel edges of the limestone with a cold chisel and hammer. For the granite in the same circumstances, torch removal of the sharp corners. (Contact the fabricator/artist for extended warranty for two years from substantial date of completion for this process.)

  1. Steel planters – Once a year, preferably in the summer when the steel is warm, apply a thorough coat of equal parts paste wax, linseed oil and turpentine with a soft cloth to the planters. The same attention given to the stone (above) should be given to the steel (with reapplication of the oil/wax/turpentine blend) if there should be graffiti, gum or stickers.

  1. Carved stones – Lithichrome paint (black), which can be purchased at any stone engraver’s, is used on the lettering. Paint should be reapplied as necessary but should last up to 10 years, because of foot traffic and pooling water from rain. When the time comes to reapply lettering paint, please contact an expert so as to maintain the artistic integrity of the words. The contact below should be able to help with re-painting and/or the smoothing of any possible chips acquired if something heavy is dropped on the lettering. Primapel sealant was applied to the O. Henry stone by the engraver. This sealant is inappropriate for the stone and its position. In one year, (July 2011), a Rilem Tube test will be done on this stone to see if the sealant is still present. If not, R97 (Cathedral Stone) will then be applied – as it is the more appropriate product for a limestone in a horizontal position. (Artists have the Rilem tube test)

Sharp edge chairs, tables or equipment should NOT be placed on the engraved stones. Chipping might occur. Suggested: any furniture placed on the site should have protective footings in place to prevent damage and chipping of all stones.

  1. Braille on steel- just a periodic check to make sure no one has stuck something in one of the divots. See above process for removal of gum. Re-paint as needed. (Products listed above)

  1. Sod berm – grass on berm should be native grass or sedge and should be cared for comparable to PARD standards for sod and should be re-sodded as needed

This comment does not pertain to the maintenance of the courtyard and the original plans provided by the artist did not include planting of the/a berm area.
