HINDU – FOUR STAGES OF LIFE

HINDU – FOUR STAGES OF LIFE

For Hindus, the rite of passage that mark life’s milestones serve to purify the soul as they mark the stages of life.

* The scriptures identify 16 key moments to celebrate.

* Many families celebrate all 16 with a ritual; however there are four that are most commonly practiced:

1. Birth 2. initiation

3. Marriage 4. Death

Read page 241 – 242 (Life Milestones) and note the differences between the milestones celebrated by Hindus and those studied by Catholics.

Complete the following Journal questions:

  1. Sacred moments being for Hindu infants in the womb, at the moment of conception. What does that tell us about the understanding Hindus have about the beginning of human life and one’s identity as a human being? How does this view of life and conception compare to the Catholic teaching of respect for life? Explain.

  2. When you examine the sacred thread ceremony, what thoughts went through your mind? What does this ceremony say about how Hindus approach education? Is there a similar ceremony for Christian children?

  3. What elements of a Hindu funeral in India demonstrate a deep respect for the dignity of the person? How does this compare to a Catholic funeral? Explain.

  4. Imagine that you had reached the age of retirement and had several grandchildren. You decided to live in seclusion and devote yourself to religious study and mediation. Describe what you feel would be the hardest things to leave behind. What experience in a Catholic’s life, if any, might be similar to this stage?

Once you are finished the first draft, assess your skills using the check list on the back. Be sure to complete the entire checklist. Rewrite your journal if you need to before submitting to the teacher.
