As a part of our year-end celebration and 4-H recognition in Cumberland County, older youth who have been involved in 4-H from 7-12 years submit portfolios. A component of their portfolio is their 4-H story that highlights what life skills they have developed and what they have learned from their involvement in the 4-H program. The following are some of the significant highlights from their 4-H stories in their own words.
Lisa Phelps, UMCE Associate Extension Professor, 2.14.07
“By growing up participating in 4-H, I have made a wide variety of friends. Through my experiences in 4-H, I tend to seek out friendships with other people that choose to lead a healthy lifestyle, set goals and practice in their lives the same things that we talk about and practice in 4-H.”
“I am thinking I would like to become a physical or occupational therapist. I am certain my 4-H background will help in whatever career I choose to pursue.”
“The most important thing to a teenager is acceptance and participating in 4H certainly gives you a feeling of belonging. Kids who participate in 4-H are different from those I meet and converse with in school. I have found from my experience that kids who are in 4-H accept someone for who they are.”
“Because of 4H I plan to major in Animal Sciences and possibly go on to become a veterinarian.”
“4-H has made me a more responsible citizen and a better person. I have learned lessons from 4-H that I believe I would not be able to have obtained from anywhere else. 4-H has also made a large impact on my career goals because it is due to my involvement with 4-H and animals that inspired me to be a vet.”
“My 4-H participation ahs influenced my school and my career goals in many ways. These experiences have given me the idea that I want to be a veterinarian in my future or involved with animal sciences in some capacity.”
“ I have learned many skills from 4-H, and I use them everyday.”
“4-H has influenced me to become a better person at school and home.”
“Because of being in 4-H I have decided to go to Vet School and work with animals.“
“4-H has made me a more responsible citizen and a better person. I have learned lessons from 4-H that I believe I would not have been able to obtain from anywhere else.”
“4-H has taught me how to be self motivated. I have also learned how to share my knowledge and experience with younger 4-H members.”
“Through 4-H I have learned that if you work hard enough for something you will succeed.”
“I know that I can be whatever I want to, because 4-H has taught me that self-confidence and determination will help me to succeed.”
“4-H has influenced me with school and career goals because it makes me want to try harder and to do my best.”
“ 4-H has pushed me to do my best and make positive choices. I think it has pointed me in the right direction and I definitely want to go to college.”
