Departmental Guidelines and Procedures for postgraduate students

Training and Assessment of Postgraduate Students

Induction week

Run by University/Faculty in early October and including Departmental induction.

Training programme during APG year

To be agreed between the supervisor(s), postgraduate tutor and Faculty

Literature review (at 4-6 months)

A written essay covering the current, literature relevant to the student’s project

Assessment for transfer from APG to PhD/MD status (by end of month 11)

For PhD candidates, a written report (3 copies to be submitted by 31^st July) followed by an interview with the student’s Supervisory Panel and formal recommendation to the University and student.

For MD candidates, a written report (as above) or departmental presentation followed by an interview with the student’s Supervisory Panel and formal recommendation to the University and student.

Students whose transfer from APG is deferred should be reassessed before the end of the 2^nd year

Assessment in Year 2 PhD candidates (by end of month 23)

An updated first year report or Departmental Seminar, to include results to date and objectives for Year 3. Interview with the student’s Supervisory Panel

Assessment early in Year 3 PhD candidates (by end of month 30)

A verbal report of progress together with a written thesis plan and written plan of work to complete.

Submission of thesis (preferably within 3 years and definitely before the end of the 4^th year. For MD preferably within 2 years and definitely before end of 3^rd year).
