Looking after yourself
Much is expected of you, perhaps from your team and your own line manager, but more often, you will be very demanding and possibly critical of yourself to do the best you can during this time. It is therefore vital that you look after yourself during this time, because if you don’t, you’ll be less effective for others as well.
Danger signs to watch out for;
Sleeplessness, oversleeping or waking up anxious in the middle of the night.
Lack of appetite or over-eating
General anxiety
Irritability or impatience
Withdrawing
Increasing use of drugs or alcohol
Listlessness, or hyper-activity.
Take care of yourself by;
Taking regular short breaks at work, perhaps going out for a 10 minute walk to clear your head.
Exercise, rest and eat regular and healthy meals, reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake.
Be kind to yourself and accept that you will have good and bad days too.
Use or develop your personal support network which will give you a confidential and supportive ear.
Try not to solve the world, but focus on some short-term plans and quick wins.
Avoid working 24/7, this performance is unsustainable and over a period of time you will end up not doing yourself or others any favours.
