Ten Things to remember when you use an overhead projector (OHP)
BEWARE OF … |
INSTEAD … |
1. “The Eye-Killer”
|
Write or type with a font size that can be easily viewed. |
2. “The Jungle”
|
Don’t try to put too much on a transparency. Keep it simple (not too many fonts and sizes) and leave plenty of ‘white space’. The worst is a paragraph from a book. |
3. “Ms. Messy Margin”
|
Keep margins straight, and leave a reasonable size of empty margin (2 cm) around the image or writing |
4. “FTS” (Flying Transparency Syndrome)
|
Don’t move a transparency. Use a ‘mask’ to gradually reveal it. Otherwise it will end up on the floor |
5. “The Butterfly”
|
Don’t wave your hand over the transparency. It looks like a trapped insect trying to escape. |
6.
“The Shadow”
|
Don’t stand in front of the beam, otherwise the audience will see your profile or overall shape. Worst if you stand in front of the screen with writing on your face –especially red or green. |
7. “Red-Green Blindness”
|
Use black and blue ink. |
8. “To Read or not to Read”
|
Don’t read from transparencies; talk around the material and keep audience engaged. |
9. “Old Shatterhand”
|
Don’t point at the transparency with your finger (especially if your hand is shaking – nerves); use a pointer and rest it on the OHP itself. |
10. “OHT Overkill”
|
Not too many OHTs: one good OHT and a good accompanying talk can do the job for you. |
