Course Description: This course provides the opportunity for students to actively participate in producing a concert as well as sharpening their music listening skills. The course is designed to have students observe and listen to as many concerts as possible throughout the semester.
Course Objectives: The student will be able to:
Participate in the concert season and conduct different concert production related responsibilities within any given concert.
Understand the role of the house manager, usher, production assistant, house engineer, box office personnel, stage manager and/or assistant stage manager within any given concert.
Attend a variety of concerts in order to expand their music literature experiences.
Requirements
The student must attend and/or participate (other than performing) in a minimum of five (5) concerts and two (2) departmental recitals throughout the semester. Ushering on at least two (2) performances is the minimum requirement. The following details constitute as credit for participation.
Students will be assigned to a specific job responsibility (usher, house manager, box office, backstage, stage manager, assistant stage manager, production assistant) for the concert. You MUST do your assigned responsibilities in order to get credit for the course.
If you are not assigned to any concerts this semester then you must attend five (5) School of Music concerts (excluding department recitals, student recitals, student concerts, as well as excluding the concerts wherein you are a performer).
Failure to participate in any assigned concert or attend the minimum number of concerts will result in an F for the course. Student MUST show up on time and ready to work designated duty.
Only FIU related conflicts are a legitimate reason for missing your assigned ushering dates.
Credit for Participation/Attendance
You will only receive credit as follows:
If attending the concert then you must keep your program stub.
If participating in the concert, then you must sign in with the Box Office Manager or House Engineer, hear the concert, and sign out at the end of the program.
Attire
If participating in a concert (meaning you have been assigned a duty given by the instructor) then you should wear all black. (Ladies, no high heels, this way you can assist either front of house or backstage if need be.)
Protocol
If Given a Specific Concert Assignment by the Instructor
Student is expected to show up forty-five minutes prior to concert time, unless otherwise specified by instructor, ensemble director or box office manager.
You are to sign in upon arrival and report to your designated person relative to your job responsibility. Job responsibilities are delineated below:
Box Office/Will Call - Report to the Box Office Manager
Ticket Taker/Usher – Report to the Box Office Manager
Front of House – Report to the Box Office Manager and check in with Ensemble Director/Conductor to see if there are any special requests for the front of the house.
Stage Manager/Assistant Stage Manager/Backstage Crew – Contact Ensemble Director (communication via email is fine) prior to concert (at least one week prior) to check if they need anything and/or what the stage set up requirements are and distribute that information to the Hall Manager.
