AMBASSADOR OF ROMANIA HELD A SPEECH AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “GEOPOLITICAL REVIEW OF THE CASPIAN: NEW ROLE FOR AZERBAIJAN”

OCOMPILED AND EDITED BY THE NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY n April 29, 2015 Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, delivered a speech at the international conference “Geopolitical review of the Caspian: new role for Azerbaijan”, organized in Baku by NATO International School of Azerbaijan.

In his speech Ambassador Ciobanu underlined that Romania is interested in deepening the economic cooperation with Baku through implementation of substantial projects in order to correspond to the excellent level of political relations. A project of strategic value is the establishment of a Freight Transport Corridor Black Sea-Caspian Sea, which will open new opportunities for cooperation and more ample trade opportunities for goods from Central Asia and Caucasus to be brought on the European market, in its very heart.

Ambassador Ciobanu highlightened that Azerbaijan plays an important role in increasing European energy security. Romania has been a consistent advocate and fully supports the development of the gas interconnector Azerbaijan – Georgia – Romania – Hungary (AGRI), which can provide the shortest route between the gas fields in the Caspian Sea and the European market.

Ambassador Ciobanu said that intensified political, economic and energy cooperation among NATO members and partner countries in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea area presents an important strategic interest for the entire Euro-Atlantic community and beyond. Embassy of Romania in Baku currently fulfills the mandate of NATO Contact Point Embassy in the Republic of Azerbaijan (for the fourth time in a row).

As a NATO and EU member, Romania is determined to further promote and actively support Azerbaijan’s efforts to enhance its relations with the European and Euro-Atlantic institutions.

celebration of NATO Day in Romania

COMPILED AND EDITED BY THE NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY

On April 5th, 2015 NATO Day was celebrated in Romania.

Joining the North Atlantic Alliance in April 2004 was a salient moment in Romanian history, marking completion of a major foreign policy goal that was supported by the entire Romanian society.

With its contributions Romania has taken part in Allied missions and operations and brought added value to developing NATO policies, throughout this time carving a special profile for itself within the Alliance.

The North Atlantic Alliance remains the main guarantor of Romania’s security, and from our country’s perspective the central goal is strengthening NATO’s relevance and effectiveness as a crucial pillar of Euro-Atlantic security.

In 2015 Romania will consistently pursue the strengthening of Allied solidarity, of the trans-Atlantic relationship, and continued promotion of the Euro-Atlantic values in the neighborhood so as to ensure a stable, predictable security environment. The security situation at international level and especially in the Alliance’s eastern and southern neighborhood requires that NATO focus on developing its original mission, namely collective defense.

NCOMPILED AND EDITED BY THE NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY ATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the 28 Permanent Representatives to the North Atlantic Council discussed the Alliance’s continuous adaptation in the face of new security challenges on Tuesday (21 April 2015) in Izmir, Turkey. Held at the Headquarters of Allied Land Command (LANDCOM), the talks were also attended by Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow and the Chairman of the Military Committee, General Knud Bartels.

The ambassadors focused on current security developments to the Alliance’s east and south, reviewed the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan and discussed NATO’s continuous adaptation in the run-up to the Warsaw Summit in 2016. They also examined ways to enhance cooperation with partners such as the European Union in order to best address hybrid threats.

The ambassadors were briefed by the Commander of LANDCOM, Lieutenant General John W. Nicholson, on current priorities and challenges, and met soldiers and civilians working there. LANDCOM is a key operational command in NATO's new command structure.

The North Atlantic Council is also visiting the Multinational Military Flight Crew Training Center at Çiğli Jet Air Base. This is a Smart Defence project with Turkey in the lead, aimed at pooling and sharing flight training installations, in order to provide standardised aircrew training, share flight training experience, develop new cooperation areas among allies and partners, and minimise training costs.

STATEMENT BY NATO SPOKESPERSON OANA LUNGESCU ON MISLEADING AND INCORRECT RUSSIAN STATEMENTS

COMPILED AND EDITED BY THE NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY

A number of misleading and incorrect statements about NATO were made by senior Russian officials in Moscow on Thursday 16 April.

Here are the facts:

NATO’s missile defence system is not designed or directed against Russia. It does not pose a threat to Russia’s strategic deterrent. Geography and physics make it impossible for the NATO system to shoot down Russian intercontinental missiles from NATO sites in Romania or Poland. Their capabilities are too limited, their planned numbers too few, and their locations too far south or too close to Russia to do so.

The aim of NATO missile defence is to protect our European Allies against the increasing threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles. The Iran framework agreement does not change that fact.

Russia also claims that NATO is escalating tensions by holding nuclear exercises in Eastern Europe. This is untrue. At no point have we moved nuclear weapons to Eastern Europe. Furthermore, NATO’s nuclear posture is fully consistent with the Non-Proliferation Treaty. It is Russia that has started to use its nuclear weapons as a tool in its strategy of intimidation.

Russia has increased nuclear rhetoric and stepped up its nuclear exercises. Russian nuclear-capable bombers are flying close to Alliance borders. Russia has also threatened to base nuclear-capable missiles in Kaliningrad and Crimea. This activity and this rhetoric do not contribute to transparency and predictability in the context of a dramatically changed security environment due to Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine.

NATO is a defensive alliance, so in response to Russia's actions, we have increased our military presence in the eastern part of our Alliance. This presence is rotational, defensive, proportional and in line with our international commitments. NATO will defend all Allies against any threat.
