COURSE DESCRIPTION
BUS 1020 – Business Career Exploration
BUS 1020 is designed to help undecided business students explore business majors and careers. Students will participate in activities and assignments to enhance their understanding of self (values, skills, personality, and interests), explore academic majors and associated career pathways, network with professionals, and develop internship search and basic interviewing skills.
Credit: 1 hour
WORK OF THE COURSE
Topics:
To meet the course learning outcomes, students will participate in
exercises and activities to advance in these areas: Self-assessment
and decision-making on an academic major and career path; ways in
which values and value-based decisions affect career decision-making;
informational interviewing and networking; preparation of a resume
and interest message appropriate for internship application;
self-introduction and interviewing practice with potential internship
employer partners.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
Use self-assessment information to identify academic and career pathways that align with their abilities (deleted), interests, skills, personality and values.
Explore academic and career pathways by gathering information on employment outlook, job titles, employers, salary ranges, and student organizations.
Demonstrate professional business etiquette (dress, handshake, introductions, thank-you & follow-up) while networking with employer representatives and alumni.
Conduct a job (internship) search and prepare internship (changed from “professional”) job search materials.
Prepare for and participate in a practice employment interview including introductions, answering behavioral interview questions and asking questions of the employer.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Student:
Attendance and participation. Students who miss class are expected to e-mail the instructor to report the absence. It is the students’ responsibility to ask for content or assignments missed.
Meets due dates. Turn in assignments by due date to be eligible for full credit. Seek instructor approval to turn in assignments after the due date.
2. Instructor:
Guides students in the development of knowledge and skills in the areas of self-assessment, career exploration, decision-making, and job search preparation.
Is willing to talk with students after class and at other mutually convenient times to clarify work requirements, materials, or other concerns relative to students’ exploration experience.
Is an active and enthusiastic participant in students’ search for a satisfactory educational direction and career path.
