RESPONSIBILITY: BSMS STUDENT DRESS CODE


Goal: The Dress Code at BSMS creates a positive learning environment that is safe, reduces learning barriers, and promotes acceptance for all students.


RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR


  1. Students will follow the dress code at school and all school sponsored events during the school day.

  2. Appropriate dress (per district policy) is required for all after school activities.



CONSEQUENCES FOR INFRACTIONS


1. On the first violation of the dress code, parents will be notified and the student will be required to correct the violation. If the student does not or can not correct the violation, he/she will be sent to PAWS with Mr. Campbell. There, he/she will be given a uniform for the day and will work through a series of lessons the will help the student better understand the dress code.


2. On the second violation of the dress code, parents will be notified and the student will be required to correct the violation. If the student does not or can not correct the violation, he/she will be sent to Mr. Campbell, who will document the situation and refer the student to Mrs. McClain for in-school discipline for defiance.


3. Any repeated violation will follow the same steps as #2, with the discipline growing more severe with each repeated violation.


ENCOURAGEMENT PROCEDURES


Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions.

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES


1. All faculty and staff members are responsible for enforcing the dress code.


2. While enforcing the dress code, faculty and staff will interact positively with students.


3. If a student violates the dress code, use a respectful but firm voice to inform the student of the violation. Point out the appropriate dress the student needs to exhibit and implement the discipline process.



TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES


1. At the beginning of each school year and after each break, Social Studies teachers will teach dress code expectations.

A. These lessons should be conducted in a way that helps students understand why

procedures have been implemented.

B. Lessons should be presented in a way that implies staff and students will work

together.


2. The principal or another designee will review dress code expectations with student teachers and Classroom Assistants.



LESSON PLANS FOR: BSMS DRESS CODE

(Social Studies)


I. Introduction

A. The Dress Code at BSMS creates a positive learning environment that is safe, reduces learning barriers, and promotes acceptance for all students.


B. Students will understand and demonstrate appropriate dress as specified in the Browning Springs Middle School Dress Code.


II. Tell Phase

A. Teacher will introduce a picture of a person in professional dress (soldier, doctor, fireman, policeman, etc.) and will discuss the d\features of the uniform and why these features are necessary for the specific profession portrayed.


B. Teacher will introduce the dress code. (Refer to Student Agenda)


C. Discuss the importance of the dress code.


III. Show Phase

Model Appropriate dress and point out student examples of appropriate dress.


IV. Do Phase

Divide in cooperative groups and allow students to create examples/nonexamples of appropriate dress.


V. Conclusion

Students will present their examples/nonexamples to the class.


DAY 2 – BSMS DRESS CODE

I. Introduction

A. The Dress Code at BSMS creates a positive learning environment that is safe, reduces learning barriers, and promotes acceptance for all students.


B. Students will understand and demonstrate appropriate dress as specified in the Browning Springs Middle School Dress Code.



II. Tell Phase

  1. Teachers will discuss the history of the Dress Code and the representatives who created it. (Point out that students were involved in the process.)

  2. Teachers will re-introduce the dress code. (Refer to Student Agenda)


III. Show Phase

Model Appropriate dress and point out student examples of appropriate dress.


IV. Do Phase

Teacher will choose 2-3 volunteers to go into the hallway and create a non-example of appropriate dress. Student will re-enter the classroom and students will have to point out the specific violations.


V. Conclusion

Debrief the activity and allow students to ask questions.


DAY 3 – BSMS DRESS CODE

Review Dress Code Policy with students as needed.
