The Castle Project - An Explanation

I've always loved castles. Used to get a new castle calendar from Mom and Dad every year at Christmas. I collected them cut them apart and glued construction paper on the back knowing innately they would serve a purpose some day.

That day arrived when the kids in the classroom shared that they wanted to do some creative writing as we had been working with research for awhile and needed a break.

I brainstormed this list of prompts and gave them each a castle "of their own" to serve as inspiration for their writing. I had them numbered and they copied the number on their prompt sheet. Each day they arrived to class they would find their own castle in the pile and I'd have "castle music" playing in the background. The "Somewhere in Time" soundtrack and "Greencard" soundtrack work very well for "Castle Music."

I'd give the kids choices after the initial prompts. And the mini-unit would last as long as interest was peaked.

In the end-of-the-year reflections, this creative writing project was notably a favorite of most.

I truly hope you, and your students enjoy it as it's a favorite of mine.
