Practical Activities

Hold up pictures of fractions – pupils to say what the fraction is.
Hold up pictures of shapes where some are cut into equal sizes, others are not – ask the pupils if the shape shows equal fractions or not. If the parts are equal, what fraction?
Revise the fractions within a clock – quarter past, half past, quarter to …
Divide circles, squares, rectangles into different fractions – label.
Use whiteboards to practice word problems.
Use of whiteboards to make fractions that equal 1,
for example; ½ + ½ = 1, ¼ + ¾ = 1 etc. (if more appropriate, draw the fractions e.g. in circles)
Cut pieces of string into given amounts (e.g. ½, ¼, a third, a fifth, etc).
Revise equivalent fractions (using fraction boards) : colour to show (e.g. ½ = two quarters/four eighths). Use the boards to answer given questions re equivalence.

Worksheet with questions on ‘What fraction of this shape is shaded?’

Use squared paper/grids and colour in a given amount – e.g. ¹/₂, ¹/₃, ¹/₄ or ¹/₅ Alternatively, colour in a fraction of the shape : ½ of 12 or ¼ of 8 or ¹/₁₀of 80. A number sentence can be written to go with the grids e.g. ½ of 12 is 6.
