SSC Opportunity for Year 3 and 4 Medics

At Sea with Disability

The development of an enabling attitude toward disabled persons is a key attribute of the well-rounded doctor. However so often as doctors we encounter disabled persons in situations which focus on what people can’t do and not what they can. Without ourselves being disabled (and there are many successful, disabled, medics) it can be hard to understand the perspective of the disabled.

If you feel drawn to developing your awareness of disabled persons as persons, then read on. The UoB Medical School, in liaison with the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), wish to develop a highly innovative SSC opportunity for Year 5 medics. This involves going to sea on board one of the two ships owned and operated by JST.

During these voyages (of 5-7 days) you would be the “buddy” of a person with a disability – typically someone who gets about by wheelchair following injury, illness or congenital problem. This involves working alongside them in all the tasks of the voyage.

You would be required to familiarise yourself with the literature on disability and to keep a detailed log of your experience before, during and after the voyage. This would include video and/or audio logs. There will be four students on each voyage and you would meet with the other medics daily (you would be on different watches so not actually working alongside the others).

Following the voyage you would write a 3000 word report on your experience. Both prior to and after the voyage you would meet with all the other JST students for a briefing and debriefing. This will probably be in the evening to facilitate anyone coming back from Academies.

Last year eight students completed the At Sea With Disability SSC. See the end of this document for some of the things they said about the experience.

These voyages come under the JST’s “Youth Leadership at Sea” scheme. Full details of this are in an accompanying document. This allows you to apply for a bursary of up to £300. There are enough bursaries for all four students per voyage to get the award providing they meet the JST criteria.
