Duties

Coordinator: Orient new volunteers, schedule shifts, liase between Emergency volunteers and the Manager of Volunteer Services, co-drafting handbook for Emergency volunteers

Volunteer: During my weekly shifts, I provide support to the Staff by performing tasks related to patient care, sometimes assisting a nurse with one acute patient for the entire shift, and I provide support to Patients to help manage anxiety and discomfort associated with the two-to-three hour wait. In addition, I feed patients who require assistance, assist in suturing children (when there is no nurse available) and in the setting and casting of fractures. I attend to the families of acute patients, hold the hands of trauma victims until their family members arrive, keep psychiatric patients company, help place cadavers in body bags and transport them to the morgue, and relieve the Ward Clerk during breaks.
