Other Significant changes affecting Departmental Scholarly Activity:
The Chairman has emphasized the need for producing Scholarly Activity for each faculty
member and has emphasized the changing expectations in that area including the overall guiding principle of increasing scholarly activity each year by at least 5% for measurable indices such as those provided in this document
The Chairman began a new monthly meeting in October, 2007, for all Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty called the Scholarly Activity Meeting where selected faculty bring forward manuscripts in preparation, grant applications they are working on, or ideas they would like to develop into research studies or grant proposals so that they can be discussed and brainstorming and constructive criticism can be provided to the documents being prepared so that their content can be improved prior to submission or full development. In the ten meetings that have been held to date the following notable effects have been realized:
Dr. Arias has received constructive criticism on a grant application he will be sending to NIH for the January deadline
Dr. Bowman has brought forward a grant application that was not funded in the previous year for comments and suggestions which he has incorporated into the application and has resubmitted to the AACP – New Investigator’s Program for funding. The results are pending at this time.
Dr. Jordan brought a manuscript that had been rejected at one journal to a meeting for discussion and criticism for revision. She then revised the manuscript and resubmitted it and the article has now been accepted in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and is in press
Dr. Rowles brought a manuscript in preparation to a meeting and it was constructively criticized and reviewed by the Department. She then revised the manuscript using these comments and it has now been published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics 12: 15-26, 2007.
Dr. Fisher brought a teaching workshop results with a new technique he was trying to the group for comment and criticism because he wanted to submit it for consideration first as a poster presentation at the National AACP meeting and then as a possible article for publication. After considerable discussion Dr. Fisher revised the abstract submission considerably and sent the revised abstract to the meeting for consideration. The abstract was accepted and Dr. Fisher presented this poster at the National AACP Meeting in Orlando, Florida, this past July, and is now preparing the manuscript at ghis new place of employment in Hawaii.
Dr. Emerson is scheduled to bring a grant application to the next scheduled meeting in September for submission to NIH.
The other changes that have greatly affected the ability of the faculty to perform scholarly activity are:
the hiring of a second Medicinal Chemist to alleviate the teaching load on the one Medicinal Chemist the Department already had
the evening out of the teaching assignments by the Chair of the Department so that each faculty has an average of about 50-60 hours of teaching per year and has a minimum of one quarter without teaching assignments, and a second quarter with a lighter load. This will be helped even more with the replacement of Dr. Fisher and Dr. Gentry this Fall.
