Kärcher Futuretech and Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks presented their collaborative effort for improved drinking water supply in disaster areas for the first time: Using the all-terrain Unimog, water purification systems can be transported to difficult-to-access regions.

A team meeting the highest demands

In disaster situations and in disaster areas, supplying people with drinking water as quickly as possible is one of the most important tasks. In areas in which regular supply routes have been destroyed, alternative and quickly operational transport solutions must be found. For this reason, Kärcher Futuretech, a specialist in mobile supply systems, has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, the manufacturer of the legendary Unimog, to develop a highly mobile, all-terrain Water Purification Unit. It enables the transport of up to three autonomous drinking water supply systems to different locations over difficult-to-access terrain. A hydraulically operated crane helps save time when unloading the systems onsite. As soon as the Mobile Water Purification Unit is unloaded, the loading platform is prepared for use distributing the drinking water to the surrounding regions. A pillow tank with a capacity of 5000 litres is placed on the platform and filled using a high-capacity pump integrated on the Unimog.

This pump is then also used to extract the water for people when needed. This system from Kärcher Futuretech and Mercedes-Benz Unimog offers aid organisations an ideal solution for the production and distribution of vital drinking water.

"The combination of the Unimog from Mercedes-Benz and the WTC 5000 UF from Kärcher Futuretech is a stand-alone unit that can produce and distribute drinking water in disaster situations even far away from any type of infrastructure,"

explained Werner Götz from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks.

360000 litres of drinking water per day

The core of these systems being transported on the Mobile Water Purification Unit is the WTC 5000 UF water treatment system from Kärcher Futuretech. It is operated by the included power generator and can produce up to 5000 litres of drinking water per hour. It produces particle-free drinking water from nearly any natural source of raw water. This water is classified as both microbial and virally safe, and also complies with the German Ordinance on Drinking Water. The daily output of three WTC 5000 UFs working together is 360000 litres per day. This complies with the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the supply of up to 50,000 people.

"The WTC 5000 UF offers the ideal combination of intuitive operation, easy disassembly, low energy consumption and an enormous drinking water production output for mobile use," noted Dip. Ing. Franz Weber, a water specialist from Kärcher Futuretech.
