ZONING INSPECTOR


DEFINITION


Under general supervision, to advise the public as to the County ordinances that are administered by the Zoning Division; to verify and enforce compliance with these ordinances; to maintain zoning maps; and do other related work as required.



EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Inspects and investigates compliance with county zoning, rural numbering, erosion control, and other relevant ordinances; advises the public, developers, builders and contractors regarding zoning related issues; locates and identifies property and pertinent zoning, inspects and verifies building size, location and use for which zoning permits have been issued; issues certifications of compliance; reviews and issues permits; assigns address numbers; works with survey maps, subdivision plats, base maps, aerial photographs and other available map information; maintains zoning maps; prepares reports and processes violations.



EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS


Education and Experience: High school graduation, and an associate degree in civil technology from an accredited technical school (or junior college) with experience in subdivision plats and certified survey maps or two years of full-time work experience in ordinance or code enforcement and courses in drafting and mapmaking. An equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered. Additional credit will be awarded for erosion control enforcement.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of county, municipal and state codes and ordinances which are applicable to land use control and zoning administration; ability to read and interpret legal descriptions; possession of effective oral and written communication skills; skills in reviewing and interpreting plans and specifications for accuracy, feasibility, and compliance with zoning regulations; computer skills entering data accurately; ability to analyze and interpret zoning and other ordinances; ability to work alone in the field; ability to make independent decisions requiring discretion and judgment; ability to advise architects, builders and contractors regarding zoning regulations; ability to prepare reports and to present facts clearly and concisely; and ability to work effectively with others.


Special Requirements: Must have (or be eligible for) valid driver’s license.
