Knowledge for Tour Guide Accreditation
The Uluru Knowledge for Tour Guides Accreditation is an entry-level training that covers the following key areas:
cross cultural awareness
joint management and park management
visitor safety
parks natural and cultural values
history,
minimising environmental impact and
legal compliance.
Park staff, Aboriginal traditional owners, and the tourism industry were consulted in developing the course.
Course fees are payable to Charles Darwin University upon enrolment.
Fees for Northern Territory residents are $292.50
Course fees for interstate students are $400.00.
Course fees for internationals are $400.00.
Note: the course fees listed are subject to change after 1 December 2015.
Tour guides can complete the course at their own pace and duration will depend on the guide’s existing knowledge of the subject matter. If you have significant experience of the area, it may take only a few days to complete the assessment. For newer guides, Charles Darwin University advises that the course may require 127 nominal hours.
There are two streams of undertaking the accreditation:
External student: |
Do not attend classes. This is a flexible program where all the tools needed to complete the course are supplied at the time of enrolment. Lecturer support available through email, phone, Skype or face to face tutorials.
|
Mixed Student: |
Student attends a three day face to face workshop either at Yulara or Alice Springs. Workshops do not guarantee competency, Workshops are a flexible learning style to assist students that prefer face to face learning. Please contact Charles Darwin University for scheduled classes. Students complete some assignments in class and complete the remainder in their own time. Lecturer support available through email, phone, Skype or face to face tutorials. |
The content of the Uluru Knowledge for Tour Guides course is delivered through Charles Darwin University’s web-based learning platform ‘Learnline’. The course materials can also be made available to students in print format and a Knowledge Handbook is available to support students in completing assignments. To obtain a printed version contact Charles Darwin University via the contact details provided below.
The knowledge handbook is available on the park website at http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/publications/uluru/ pubs/handbook.pdf or from Charles Darwin University in hard copy.
6. How will participants be assessed?
Guides can complete their assessment questions through whichever means they are most comfortable with - including written or video/audio recordings, email, face-to-face or over the phone. Charles Darwin University will undertake the assessment.
Course participants who successfully complete the course will receive a nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment from Charles Darwin University. Students should send a copy of their Statement of Attainment to the park via email [email protected] or post to PO Box 119, Yulara NT 0872.
Once the park has received the Statement of Attainment each guide is issued with an ID card which should be carried on their person as proof of accreditation.
Permits to conduct tours for commercial purposes includes a condition stating that: the permittee must ensure that each of the permittee's staff that provides the permittee's clients with information about the park and its values must have successfully completed the entry-level tour guide training course.
While tour guides who have already completed a nationally accredited tourism qualification may have successfully completed the elective unit SITTGDE008A Research and Share General Information on Australian Indigenous Culture, there is specific information about Uluru and Kata Tjuta which that unit does not cover. The Knowledge for Tour Guides training course has been developed with knowledge specific to guiding in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
10. Can I get recognition of prior learning?
No. Despite your existing knowledge and experience, you must demonstrate this knowledge by completing all the assessment tasks of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Knowledge for Tour Guides training course. If you already know the content, you’ll be able to be assessed much more quickly.
If you have successfully completed Kakadu accreditation SITTGDE101 Interpret Aspects of Local Indigenous Culture, SITXCCS201 Provide Visitor Information and SITXWHS101 Participate in safe work practices, the student only needs to complete SITTGDE306 Research & share general information on Australian Indigenous culture to gain the Uluru accreditation.
Yes. Successful completion of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta course is a permit requirement for all tour guides and drivers who interpret the park and its values. Visiting international or interstate guides escorting tour groups, or guides on extended tours, must use the services of an accredited "Step on Guide" if they have not successfully completed the course themselves.
The park has a list of accredited local "Step on Guides" who can provide high quality interpretation in languages other than English. Please contact the park at [email protected] for a copy of the Step on Guides list.
All visiting international guides escorting tour groups must have the relevant work authority to work in Australia. Visit www.immi.gov.au/immigration/coming-to-australia/ for details.
