Colors
are like musical instruments. Just as each instrument has its own
special sound, every color also has its own “personality”.
Combining colors in just the right way can lead to striking results. Analogous
colors sit next to each other on
the color wheel. They tend to look
pleasant together because they are closely related. The common hue
creates a feeling of unity in the design by tying together each part
of the design. Red-violet,
red, and red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow and yellow-green
are examples of analogous colors. In his paining Lion
and Horse, the great Mexican
painter Rufino Tamayo uses two sets of analogous colors to divide
the painting in half. How do you know that these colors are closely
related? They sit next to each other on the color wheel and they
share a color—the three colors in the bottom half contain some
form of red and the three colors toward the top contain some form of
yellow, while the color in between-orange, contains both red and
yellow. In
Lion and Horse,
there are two opposing animals: a lunging sharp-toothed lion and a
frantically flailing horse. At times, it is useful to think of the
world as composed of pairs: good/bad, night/day, etc. Artists do
this too. Notice how Tamayo has created pairs of lion/horse, wild
animals/domesticated animals, green/red, light/dark, sky/earth,
stick/stones, aggressor/victim. It is important to note that the
painting was completed in 1942 during World War II.
How does the artist Rufino Tamayo’s
choice of color
affect the painting?
