Subject: SOUTHWEST MONSOON-2008: DAILY FLOOD SITUATION REPORT
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT EVENTS AS ON 01.07.2008
RAINFALL SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY MAHARASHTRA Very heavy rainfall to extremely heavy falls has been reported in the State. No human death has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. Due to water logging on railway tracks at several places rail traffic has been disrupted in Mumbai. Water has receded in the afternoon from railway tracks and rail communication restored. Water loggings have been reported at Milandsubway, Bharatmata, Hindmata, and King circle resulting in disruption of traffic movement in these areas. However since afternoon water is gradually receding. Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (BMC) had issued a warning for High tide between 10.45 am to 5.00 PM. As per information obtained from the State Government situation is now improving. HIMACHAL PRADESH Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls at a few places has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. Several landslides/mudslides have been reported in various places leading to disruption in traffic movements. Due to rain accompanied by heavy storm, several trees are reported to have been uprooted resulting in traffic jam at various locations. ORISSA Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. About 14.91 lakh population in 1768 villages, have been affected due to flood/current spell of heavy rains. 43236 people have been evacuated from the affected districts. 368 relief camps continue to be in operation in which about 1.28 lakh people have been accommodated. ASSAM Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated very heavy rainfall at a few places has been reported in the State during last 24 hours. In 03 districts, 3,08,995 people are reported to have been affected. 15 boats continue to be deployed in the affected areas for rescue and relief operations. 33 Health Centres continue to be in operation in the affected areas for providing medical care. 05 teams of NDRF continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations. WEST BENGAL Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours. No human death has been reported in the State during the last 24 hours. In 02 districts, about 37.03 lakh people are reported to have been affected. 1129 relief camps continue to be in operation in which about 5,11,259 people have been accommodated. 02 teams of NDRF continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations.
Human deaths As per provisional information received from the affected States/UTs 04 human deaths were reported during the last 24 hours raising the total death toll to 245 from 241. IMD Yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh & adjoining areas of north Madhya Pradesh persists and extending upto 3.1 km a.s.l. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over East Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh during next 48 hours. CWC There are 02 Moderate and 12 Low flood situation sites in the country. At present, there is no unprecedented or high flood situation site in the country. |

Chief features
Yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh & adjoining areas of north Madhya Pradesh persists and extending upto 3.1 km a.s.l. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over East Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh during next 48 hours.
The off shore trough extends from Gujarat coast to Kerala coast with embedded cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea. Under this scenario, widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places is likely over Konkan & Goa, south Gujarat Region and Saurashtra during next 48 hours. Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls also likely over Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep during the same period.
The axis of the trough at sea level passes through Anoopgarh, Delhi, Kanpur, Hazaribag, Midnapore and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal.
Warning
Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is likely over Konkan, Goa and south Gujarat region and Saurashtra.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over northeastern States, East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, north Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
Outlook for next two days
Decrease in rainfall activity over west coast and central India and increase over foot hills of Himalayas
Subdued rainfall activity is likely to continue over interior south peninsula.
CENTRAL WATER COMMISSION
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) report dated 1st June, 2008, there are 02 Moderate and 12 Low flood situation sites. The details of Moderate Flood Sites are as under:
In Assam, river Brahamputra at Dibrugarh is flowing at 104.48m against the danger level of 104.24m with a falling trend.
In Bihar, river Punpun at Sripalpur is flowing at 52.07m against the danger level of 50.60m with a rising trend.
Detailed situation
MAHARASHTRA
Very heavy rainfall to extremely heavy falls has been reported in the State during last 24 hrs. Some of the rainfall figures are (in cm) : Raigarh -166, Thane -156, Ratnagiri -87, Mumbai City – 20 and Sindhudurg -10.
No human death has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
Due to water logging on railway tracks at several places rail traffic has been disrupted in Mumbai. Water has receded in the afternoon from railway tracks and rail communication restored.
Water loggings have been reported at Milandsubway, Bharatmata, Hindmata, and King circle resulting in disruption of traffic movement in these areas.. However since after noon water is gradually receding.
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (BMC) was issued a warning of High tide between 10.45 am to 5.00 pm.
As per information obtained from the State Government situation is improving.
HIMACHAL PRADESH
Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls at a few places has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
No human death has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
Several landslides/mudslides have been reported in various places leading to disruption in traffic movements.
Due to rain accompanied by heavy storm, several trees are reported to have been uprooted resulting in traffic jam at various locations.
The traffic movement on Shimla-Kalka highway and Manali-Chandigarh highway is reported to have been disrupted due to mudslides at many places
ORISSA
Light to moderate rainfall has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
No human death has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
About 14.91 lakh population in 1768 villages, in 06 districts i.e. i) Bhadarak, ii) Balasore, iii) Mayurbhanj vi) Kendrapara iv) Jajpur and vi) Kendujhar have been affected due to flood/current spell of heavy rains.
43236 people have been evacuated from the affected districts.
368 relief camps continue to be in operation in which about 1.28 lakh people have been accommodated.
368 boats and ODRAF teams continued to be deployed in the affected districts for rescue and relief operations.
47 Medical teams continue to be deployed in the affected districts.
ASSAM
Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated very heavy rainfall at a few places has been reported in the State during last 24 hours.
No human death has been reported in the State during the last 24 hours.
In 03 districts viz. Dhemaji, Lakhimpur & Sonitpur, 3,08,995 people are reported to have been affected in the State.
Following improvement in flood situation, people staying in the relief camps have left for their homes. Now all relief camps have been closed.
15 boats continue to be deployed in the affected areas for rescue and relief operations.
33 Health Centres continue to be in operation in the affected areas for providing medical care.
05 teams of NDRF continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations.
WEST BENGAL
Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in some parts of the State during last 24 hours.
No human death has been reported in the State during the last 24 hours.
In 02 districts viz. Paschim Medinipur and Poorva Medinipur about 37.03 lakh people are reported to have been affected in the State.
1129 relief camps continue to be in operation in which about 5,11,259 people have been accommodated.
162 boats continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations.
02 teams of NDRF continue to be deployed for rescue and relief operations.
DEPLOYMENT OF NATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE FORCE (NDRF) ON 30TH JUNE,2008
In Assam, 05 teams (consisting of 200 personnel) continue to be deployed in Lakhimpur (02), Dhubri (1), Badarpur (Silchar) (1) & Hailakhandi (01) for rescue and relief operations.
In West Bengal, 02 teams consisting of 99 personnel continue to be deployed for rescue operation and distribution of relief material in East Medinipur.
In Jammu & Kashmir, 01 team consisting of 38 personnel continues to be deployed for Amaranth Yatra.

RAINFALL SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY DURING LAST 24 HOURS
Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely falls at a few places has been reported in the State of Northeastern States, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala & Rajasthan and light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls at a few places in Konkan & Goa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The rainfall activity in the rest of the country is not significant.
