POSITION OBJECTIVE:

To provide efficient and effective automotive electrical services to the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS).



PRIMARY DUTIES:

  1. The wiring of new fire appliances to conform with relevant standards and organisational requirements.

  2. Diagnose electrical faults and repair / replace electrical components as required.

  3. Carry out general electrical and mechanical repairs on all TFS appliances including specialised equipment.

  4. Participate with the development of TFS standards as they relate to TFS vehicles

  5. Maintain accurate records of maintenance work including personal time summaries.

  6. Assist with the ordering, receiving and recording of spare parts and consumables

  7. Actively participate in developing and maintaining safe work practices and procedures.

  8. Provide assistance as required with the ongoing mechanical repair and maintenance of TFS vehicles.

Not required in this instance.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Directly responsible to the Automotive Electrical Specialist for:

Direction/Supervision Received:

Work is supervised by the Automotive Electrical Specialist . The incumbent is expected to exercise discretion within their classification level, be self-motivated and operate within TFS policies and guidelines. General instructions are provided, usually covering only the broader technical aspects of the work. Completed work may be evaluated for suitability and conformity to requirements and specifications



SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. Sound knowledge of all aspects of automotive electrics.

  2. Demonstrated diagnostic skills with the ability to install and/or repair equipment down to component level where required.

  3. Knowledge of vehicle fabrication with an understanding of governing standards together with an understanding of regulations covering vehicle licensing requirements.

  4. Experience with computerised vehicle records maintenance together with some experience with CAD.

  5. Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills including negotiation and communication skills enabling effective communication and open discussion to gain information or clarify issues.

  6. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and manage deadlines.



Essential Requirements (including Qualifications):

Trade certificate as an Automotive Electrician or equivalent.

Desirable Requirements:

Minimum of four years post trade practical experience, with involvement in the general operations of the workshop.

Experience in electrical design and general engineering practices is desirable.

Possess qualifications and experience in an affiliated trade such as motor mechanic or diesel technician.

Hold a current Driver’s Licence endorsed MR or HR.



WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The TFS is part of the Department of Police & Emergency Management, an agency created under the State Service Act 2000, and operates on a largely independent basis. The Chief Officer of the TFS is required to uphold and promote the State Service Principles which can be found at www.ossc.tas.gov.au/cd/2-2001.pdf All State Service employees are required to behave in a way that is consistent with these principles. The TFS has decided that it wants a safe workplace where members act with consideration, commitment, fairness and honesty. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in developing and maintaining safe work practices. The incumbent is also expected and encouraged to behave in a manner consistent with the State Service Principles, Code of Conduct and TFS desired working environment.

The TFS is responsible for the protection of life, property and the environment from fire and other emergencies. To achieve this vision, the Service is structured with four divisions: Operations, Community Fire Safety, Corporate Services and Human Services. Operations delivers emergency response and community fire safety services to the community, as well as internal training to career and volunteer members and communications dispatch services. Operations has four career brigades with around 240 members, and over 230 volunteer brigades with around 4,500 members. Community Fire Safety delivers a range of fire safety programs and services to the community, including education programs, industrial training, inspections for and advice about compliance with fire safety regulations, and the sale and servicing of fire protection equipment. Corporate Services provides support to TFS activities in the areas of finance, administration, library, information systems, appliance manufacture and servicing and communications. Human Services formulates human resources strategies and policies, and provides support and advice to the Chief Officer, Executive Management Team as well as TFS members.

As a Branch of Corporate Services, Engineering Services is responsible for the provision of fleet management, fabrication and maintenance services to the TFS as well as services to other emergency service organisations. . The Automotive Electrician supports the Manager Engineering Services by providing efficient and effective automotive electrical services that meet the needs of the TFS. The position provides a high level of customer service to all internal and external clients.

The position is located at Cambridge in a smoke-free workshop environment; some intra-state travel may be required. Working hours are 38 hours per week, During the summer period the incumbent may be required to provide support for bushfire Incident Management.
