Lightning Protection Installer Application (OWAY)

Listed Lightning Protection Installers include those companies whose services are described in a list published by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. UL maintains periodic inspection of Listed services, which states that the service either meets appropriate designated standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose.

UL’s initial assessment of installers includes a two-day course on UL96A, the Standard for Installation Requirements for Lightning Protection Systems. This course is an in-depth study of the inspection process and the standard. New installers are asked to attend this course within 12 months of initiating service with UL. Please select the class date that best suites your schedule and provide the names of the individuals who will be attending. The seminar schedule can be found here.

Our customer service professionals will receive your information and prepare service contracts and a request for preliminary deposit that covers the initial assessment and registration for a two-day course.

Established Companies

An Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF) is billed on January 31 of each year. The Annual Maintenance Fee contributes to the support of maintenance of our database systems for UL Listings, Recognitions and Classifications, mailings of information to clients relative to surveillance activities and assistance by office and field staff with technical questions that clients and Field Representatives may have during inspections. Contact our customer service professionals to learn more about the AMF fee for your company.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. has established minimum inspection requirements for continuing assessment in accordance with our accreditation as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. Listed Installer companies shall submit a minimum of ten applications annually to remain eligible to be published in our Internet directory of Listed Installers. Alternately, attendance at a two-day Lightning Protection Installer Seminar will satisfy UL’s reassessment, or minimum inspection, prerequisite.

For those lightning protection companies that have established quality management systems encompassing all aspects of their lightning protection system designs and installations a third option for reassessment is available. Minimum annual application requirements will be waived for those companies that submit to an annual quality program audit.
