Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to individuals pursuing education through our various scholarship funds. These funds have been established by generous donors, including individuals, families, organizations, and corporations from our community.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500 are available for qualified students. Each scholarship has unique requirements.

Recipients are selected on a competitive basis, considering academic and non-academic factors and demonstrated financial need. Many of the funds target students from specific areas of interest to the donor, including successful performance in high school, high school attended, and academic or career focus.

Wynne and Otto Woerner Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 by Otto H. Woerner. Mr. Woerner wanted this scholarship to benefit the families of the many past and present employees of Carolina Shoe Company. Any direct descendant (son, daughter, grandchild, great grandchild, spouse, etc.) of a Carolina Shoe employee may apply for this scholarship. To be considered a Carolina Shoe employee, a person must have worked at Carolina Shoe for a minimum of two (2) years at any time.

The criteria in order of priority are as follows: direct descendant of a Carolina Shoe employee, financial need, top half of class, and a commitment to complete a four year degree. “We want to assist Carolina Shoe families and descendents to achieve a college education. If no Carolina Shoe family members are available, we hope to assist other working class families and their children to obtain higher education. I hope this scholarship provides the funding and incentive for a young person, who would not otherwise have been able to continue his/her education,” said Otto Woerner.

Mr. Woerner established a second scholarship in July, 2004 to provide scholarship funding for a young person who would not otherwise be able to continue their education. The criteria for this scholarship is the same as the criteria for the Carolina Shoe Scholarship except that this scholarship gives no priority to Carolina Shoe employees’ families.

Applications are available through the CFBC offices and high schools in Burke County (and McDowell County for the Carolina Shoe Scholarship).
