Monday

Shape

What is a shape? Use your magic finger and draw a shape in the air. Can your friend guess what it is?

Look around the room. How many different shapes can you see? What are they? E.g. rectangle (windows) square (cupboard door).

Work through 2D shape PowerPoint.

Activity: sort 2D shapes.

Challenge: guess the shape. Adult describe a 2D shape, children guess what it is. Reveal shape by pulling it out the bag.

Read the story of The Something online at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=507nB_XF5eE

Complete The Something worksheet to show what each character from the book thought was in the hole.

Tuesday

Shape

Starter: Play shape game, complete the pattern

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

Worth through 2D shape PowerPoint (Tuesday) stop after each shape to discuss its properties, e.g. how may edges/ lines ect.

Get children to either draw the shapes on whiteboards or make the shape with their magic finger.

Activity: Draw around 2D shapes to make their own shape picture.

Today you are going to find or create your own hole like in the book The Something!

Go for a walk and look for an interesting hole in the ground, or see if you can find one in your garden. If you can’t find any, ask a grown up if you are allowed to dig a little hole in the ground! Or use the slides to see pictures of different holes and choose your favourite.

What do you think could be inside your hole?

Draw a picture and write about what is inside the hole.

Wednesday

Shape

Show children a few different 3D objects. Can they guess the name of the shape?

Discuss what is different between a 2D and a 3D shape.

Look through PowerPoint (Wednesday)

Activity: walk around your home or school and look for objects which share a 3D shape. Draw or write what the object is.

In the story The Something, everyone in the family thinks something different is in the hole. Talk to other people in your family about what they think is in your hole – does everyone have a different idea of what might be down there? Why do they think that? How do they feel about what could be down there? Record everyone’s ideas by drawing a picture and writing sentences about what they think is in the hole on the storyboard sheet.

For example – My dad thinks there is a little family of Borrowers living in the hole, with tiny furniture and tools.

My Nanna thinks there is a treasure chest deep in the hole, full of golden jewels!

Thursday

Shape

Play 3D shape sorting game http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/sorting_3d_shapes/eng/Introduction/SortShapesPop.htm

Make a list of all the 3D shapes you already know.

Play guess the shape. Teacher hides a 3D shape in the bag, describes it, children guess before it is revealed.

Activity: Use the nets to make 3D shapes. Can you name them all?

Today we are going to write our own versions of the story The Something! Fold your paper to create pages, and use each page to record all the different ideas of what could be inside the hole which you collected yesterday. Add an illustration for each. Save the last page/s to write and draw about what you think is in the hole!

Complete your folded book by adding a title on the front cover and a blurb at the back. Think about how to make your story sound exciting and mysterious for the reader, so they want to open your book and read it!

Friday

PARTY

Complete a book review about The Something – did you like the story? Has it made you wonder about what could be hiding down in holes in your garden or in the park?
