Appendix D: UW Faculty Description

The University of Wyoming has world-renowned faculty members in virtually every field. These men and women have attained international recognition by virtue of their creative work, depth of scholarship, and contributions to teaching. Their accomplishments and reputations help attract outstanding younger faculty members to the university, and their expertise and intellectual leadership help guide UW’s curriculum as well as their colleagues’ scholarly work. The following list gives brief sketches of five outstanding faculty members representing different disciplines spanning four of UW’s colleges. There are many others who are equally qualified to be on this list. A systematic effort to recruit additional faculty members at this level of professional attainment will add substantially to the university’s mission.

Professor Teresa Bogard is a professor in the Department of Music. Her scholarly interests include historical performance, early pianos, and works by women composers. She won a Fulbright Fellowship to study fortepiano at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in The Netherlands and has been a top-prize winner in the International Mozart Fortepiano Competition in Bruges, Belgium. She has performed and lectured to critical acclaim throughout the U.S., in Europe, and in New Zealand, Australia, and Mexico.

Professor Randy Lewis is a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology. In addition to his world-renowned research on spider silk proteins and biomaterials, Dr. Lewis has served as the Wyoming director of the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). He recently received the George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award, UW’s highest faculty honor.

Professor Norman Morrow holds the Wold Chair in Energy and is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. He also holds an appointment to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the world’s highest scientific honors. Professor Morrow has made ground-breaking advances in the understanding of fluid interfaces in porous media, especially in relationship to their effects on petroleum reservoir mechanics.

Professor William Reiners is professor and former department head in the Department of Botany. He is the author of numerous internationally recognized scientific articles on applications of geographic information science to ecology and is co-author of a recent book entitled, Transport Processes in Nature: Propagation of Ecological Influences Through Environmental Space, published by Cambridge University Press. He holds the J.E. Warren Professorship of Energy and the Environment at the University of Wyoming.

Professor Jason Shogren is the Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management in the Department of Economics and Finance. Professor Shogren has published numerous books and professional journal articles and has been named to Who’s Who in Economics, as one of the most frequently cited economists of the 1990s.
