Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to a) list the Pride Student Rules, b) explain why the rules are important, c) give examples of what the rules look or sound like in the library and d) demonstrate all library procedures.


To be implemented by: All classroom teachers, library media specialist, library volunteers, and paraprofessionals.


Lesson location: Library


Needed Materials: Library matrix, chart paper and markers.

  1. Display “hands up” signal. Praise/thank students who quickly imitate the signal and become silent. Remind remaining students of this expectation. Practice, as necessary.

  2. Briefly review Pride Student Rules and the reasons for having the rules.

  3. For each question that follows, first pose the question, have students “Turn and Talk with a partner”, then share some answers. Record student examples under each rule on a chart.

    1. In the Library, what would a visitor see or hear that would show we are being responsible?”

    2. In the Library, what would a visitor see or hear that would show we are being independent?”

    3. In the Library, what would a visitor see or hear that would show we are being dependable?”

    4. In the Library, what would a visitor see or hear that would show we are being engaged?

  4. Say, “Let’s compare our list of examples with the matrix (found on library walls—teachers may want to bring a chart into the classroom). Were there any important examples of being responsible, independent, dependable and engaged in the library that we missed?”

  5. Take a practice “trip” to the library media center, highlighting examples of appropriate library behavior. [Follow procedures from the PBIS Handbook.]

  1. Groups of students will travel to library with whole class, small groups, and individually with a pass.

  2. Students will respond to the “Hands up” signal by making eye contact with the adult, imitating the signal for several seconds, and proceeding in silence.

  3. K-4: Enter library silently, place returned books in book drop, walk to story area, sit in rows of five.

  4. 5-8: Enter library silently, present pass, go directly to working tables or rotunda to complete tasks.

  5. Check out library books by selecting a book from a bookcase and walking silently to the checkout computer. Wait silently in line for their turn.

  6. K-4: Exit library by silently standing up, forming a line, book under arm, exit silently with teacher.

  7. 5-8: Exit library by cleaning up work station, lining up with class or obtaining pass back to class.
