SHOULD I GO TO A&E?
If you go to A&E approx £90 is charged to the local GP budget – that is £90 we can’t spend on other things like some hospital referrals or non-urgent surgery. However there are some things only A&E can deal with so we hope the chart below will help you.
When NOT to go to A&E
Some patients think they will get a second opinion at the accident service – in fact many of the doctors working there have less experience than your GP and although they can refer to a specialist if a person is ill enough to be admitted to hospital immediately, they cannot order non-urgent tests or scans, or refer you to a specialist for an outpatient appointment.
If you have a problem that you have had for weeks or months, it is clearly NOT an accident or an emergency and your GP is the best person to speak to about it. A routine appointment with your GP will allow him or her to ask you questions about it, examine you fully and arrange any tests you might need. ©CH 2012
