How I Write

Reflecting on Writing

Choose one of the following topics (second one on back), and write an essay of at least two pages.


How I Write – We all go about writing in idiosyncratic (look it up) ways. We find what works for us and what does not; then, we try to capitalize on the former and minimize the latter. Your task in this paper is to examine and discuss your writing process. You may describe how you go about writing in general, or you may focus on a piece of writing that you have completed recently. As you compose, keep in mind that writing should delight as well as instruct. Use the following questions as a guide:


  1. When you are confronted with a writing task, how do you approach it? Do you spend days fretting about it? Immediately jot down ideas and then start playing with them? Perform an online search of relevant terms to get an idea of what’s out there? Think for days and then produce a first draft in one sitting?


  1. How do you go about producing a draft? Do you carefully assemble specific materials – like three sharp pencils and a notebook? Put on comfortable clothes and sit down at your laptop? Create an introduction that “will work” and then rework it later? Write, pace the floor, write again, pace again?


  1. Do you write with the advice of a particular person – maybe a former teacher – echoing in your mind as you compose?


  1. When do you being to consciously consider your audience? From the beginning? As you revise your first draft? Do you seek advice as you write? Do you talk to others about your ideas and perhaps about how you organize them? Do you read to or show people drafts or parts of drafts? What kinds of feedback do you look for? When others give you suggestions, how do you factor them in?


  1. How do you feel when you have completed a paper? Are you simply glad that it is done? Are you convinced that one more pass would produce a better paper?

  1. What kinds of writing do you do now or have you done? Have you written a diary or journal? Letters to a pen pal or family members? E-mail, blogs, Twitter entries, Facebook postings, or other online venues?


  1. What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of the writing process? What could you do to make your writing more effective?


  1. How do you see writing fitting into your life, both formally and informally, in the future?
