Comments from IDEM Employees who have taken advantage of the Community Service Leave program:

A friend told me about a chance to participate in "Habitat for Humanity." I've always wanted to be involved as a volunteer in this charitable organization. The Community Service Leave Policy allowed me to donate more time. As a result, this leave policy contributed to providing a home to a person that would have not been able to afford one otherwise. I am thankful that the State of Indiana is willing to make this investment to people and the community.

As volunteer co-chair of the Indiana Chapter of the Tourette Syndrome Association biannual conference, I spent many evening and weekend hours planning the event. I was able to work at the conference while receiving paid leave from my job.

Volunteerism can add a whole new dimension to life. Take advantage of Community Service Leave and receive paid leave while you perform volunteer community service.

I'm an adult leader in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and having that one extra day off for community service gave me the time I needed to attend camp with both troops. I actually used the Community Service Leave to go to Ransburg Boy Scout Reservation both years, but I felt less pressure to hang on to my vacation days, and spent a week at the Girl Scouts' Camp Dellwood. Both kids enjoyed having me at camp with them, and nobody had to "suffer" without me.

As a parent of two elementary age children, I know it is very important to be involved with my children's education and be as active in their school as much as possible. With our busy schedules, volunteering to be a part of the educational process for my children is difficult but this program has allowed me to be present as a chaperone on an historical/educational field trip. I enjoyed spending the day with my daughter, her classmates and supporting the teachers in educating our children about our important heritage. School field trips to museums, historical sites, and civic activities are difficult without volunteers/parents who can come along to help keep children safe and show a strong interest in their education with their presence.

I used Community Service Leave last spring to accompany my son's 4th grade class on an overnight trip to Camp Tecumseh. On this trip a great deal of parent participation was needed, as they helped to lead breakout sessions on various activities that settlers used for survival in the past. It was a wonderful experience that I probably would not have been able to participate in if the Community Service Leave hadn't been available. This has enabled me to be an actual participant rather than just a bystander in a very important part of my children's lives - their school.

It is great to see the State encourage Community Service. Everyone is a winner, the non-profit entity, you as the donor and the State. It provides Indiana citizens an opportunity to see state employees in a positive light.
