In this newsletter we have a number of people to whom we must extend a very big thank you. Vivian N. Counsel from Waidroka donated F$500.oo which is to be used to help the clinic. We are hoping to use this money to improve the surgery. Sally Carmiencke from Pacific Harbour made up over 20 cat baskets for us to help in the transportation of sick cats to and from the clinic and to use as recuperation baskets after the cats have been spayed. Dr. John Holt, a veterinary surgeon from Australia donated about $1000.oo of veterinary equipment to the clinic, Mr R Austin from Lami financed the publishing costs for our volunteer’s fund raising venture and the Rhea family from the American Embassy fostered; over 50 puppies and found good loving homes for all of them. There are also many other people in and around Suva who have remembered us and donated newspapers, dog food, towels, blankets and even space to hold field clinics. To all these people we would just like to express our appreciation, without you we would be losing the battle. You are the switch that turns the light on at the end of the tunnel.

What’s been happening at the SPCA?

Well as most of our members already know the last six months have been very busy. We now have not one, but two new vets to add to the staff at the Suva branch, Dr Yadlin from Israel and Dr. Narayan, who was trained in Melbourne which means that the clinic can stay open longer and we have more time to run field clinics. On top of this we have been lucky enough to have a number of volunteers come out to Fiji to lend a helping hand. The first to arrive was Dr. Philips at the end of February. Dr. Philips is a veteran vet who worked at the SPCA in Fiji over 30 years ago and he came out this time not as a practitioner but as a consultant and advisor. Toby Floyd and Claire Kiesling followed shortly after him to give us all a hand on a more practical level. Toby is a young vet from Australia who wanted a little adventure before moving to England to set up his own practice and Claire was a newly qualified vet from Germany, in search of some real hands on experience. Both were invaluable to the Suva and the Western Branches. In May, Gabrielle Lawson and Stephanie Tumner arrived. Gabrielle is a vet from New Zealand and Stephanie works for the Greenpeace Organization in London. On top of their clinical and kennel responsibilities these two have been working on a fund raising venture, which we hope will help finance some of our operations. They also had the chance to do a little fieldwork and assisted the vets at a field clinic in Pacific Harbour. In the Western branch Dr. Catherine Simpson is arriving this month to work on a neutering program for stray animals.

The SPCA staff with the help of some local volunteers has also been busy organizing an education program. The two vets write an article every week called Vet Talk in the Fiji Times, outlying some of the more common problems found in animals. The ‘Get Set’ children’s program on Fiji 1 filmed a segment at the SPCA showing the adoption and vaccination procedure. Two of our younger volunteers from the International School of Suva are working on a children’s newsletter and the Fiji Sun has promised to run an adoption corner to promote some of our puppies and kittens.

Notices.

Our stray dog problem.

As we are all aware there are a tremendous number of stray animals wandering around the towns and villages of Fiji and many people have contacted the SPCA about this problem.

There is in fact a procedure that must be followed in order for the SPCA to help. If your neighborhood is being over run with unwanted animals the first people to contact are your local town council. They will expect you to make a formal request to have the situation resolved. It is then up to the town council to request the SPCA to trap and remove the dogs. As soon as the Council has notified the SPCA they will then trap the animals and try to re-home them.

Lost or found animals

If, by chance, your animal goes missing or you find a lost animal the first people you should contact are the SPCA. We will endeavor to make sure that the animal is returned safely to its rightful owners. All animals that are licensed through our organization are on file. We would need the license tag #, distinguishing markings, the sex and size of the animal and the location where it has been found or lost. Contact phone numbers are also important.

Roc Market

As of the 20/06/04 the SPCA will have a stall at the Roc Market in Suva. We are looking for items to sell at our stall. If you have anything to donate to the stall don’t hesitate to call Irava at the Suva office. We would welcome anything but diamonds and gold would be preferable (ha, ha.)
