Grassroots Empowerment Initiative

Small-Business Reports

GEMINI believes strengthening a community’s economic positions contributes immensely to empowerment. Over the past four months, we trained 3 women on basic entrepreneurship skills. The project also assisted them launch and market their businesses. Our field officers have been monitoring them and filed the following comments from the beneficiaries:

Susan Oluoch, Fresh fruit vendor

“After my husband’s death from HIV, I could not make ends meet and all my relatives shunned me. I was kicked out of my late husband’s house.

“It’s now 2 months after I started selling fresh fruit juice and salad: last month alone, I made $120 as profit!! This is enough to sustain my three children….but I’m still working on my marketing and I believe more is yet to come!!!”

Milka Wangeci, Second-hand clothes dealer

“The first thing I’ve done after opening my business is to move from the slums. I now live in a respectable 2-bedroom house in an estate where my daughter can have access to clean water, education and good food.

“Starting with only $200 as capital, I have been able to build my asset base to over $500. I have put a down payment for a piece of land I intend to buy. Hopefully, my business will grow and enable me put up some residential flats.”

“I still don’t believe this is real! I’ve been able to increase my income steadily and I now have some savings to open another food café. My five children are all in school and I have promised them they will go all the way to college.
