MTA New York City Transit welcomes the opportunity to provide paratransit Access-A-Ride service to eligible visitors to the CEC convention

MTA New York City Transit Paratransit Information for Visitors

MTA New York City Transit welcomes the opportunity to provide Access-A-Ride (AAR) paratransit service to eligible visitors to New York City. We suggest that visitors become familiar with AAR by reading Access-A-Ride Paratransit Service User’s Guide. Please call toll-free from area codes 212,718, 347, 516, 631, 646, 914 and 845 by dialing 877-337-2017 or 718-393-4999 to obtain this publication and other information about AAR. Information and publications about AAR, buses and subways can also be obtained from NYC Transit Customer Assistance by dialing 718-330-3322.

Visitors must submit to NYC Transit a copy of their paratransit ID card (front and back) or other equivalent paratransit eligibility documentation issued by the city or town in which they reside. Visitors lacking the above-mentioned documentation must submit proof of residency outside of New York City and proof of disability. A legible, dated and signed letter from a doctor or rehabilitation professional indicating an individual’s disability is acceptable proof.

In addition, Visitors must provide the following information:

Name

Home address and telephone and business telephone, if appropriate

New York City address and cross streets where you are staying

Telephone where you are staying

Date of birth

Emergency Contact (telephone) in New York City

Are you traveling with a personal care attendant (PCA)*?

Are you traveling with a guest?

Do you use a service animal?

Type of equipment you use, i.e., walker, crutches, wheelchair, scooter, (please indicate if the wheelchair or scooter is wider than 30 inches and/or longer than 48 inches), etc.

Will you need the driver to call out your name (for those with a visual impairment) when the vehicle arrives.

Do you need information in an accessible format (such as large print or cassette)?

*A customer whose paratransit ID card indicates that he/she requires a PCA may have the attendant accompany him/her at no additional charge.

Visitors who have received an NYC Transit paratransit AAR ID number may reserve a trip by calling 718-393-4999 (outside New York City) or 877-337-2017 (in New York City) between 7 AM and 5 PM (Eastern Standard Time) daily, one to two days in advance of their trip. The caller can expect the reservationist to ask the caller for his/her ID number, the address, phone number and cross streets of the trip starting point and the address, cross streets and telephone number of the trip destination. If the building at the trip starting point or the trip destination has more than one entrance, the visitor should specify to the reservationist the particular entrance at which he/she wishes to be picked up and dropped off. Visitors who need to be somewhere by a specific time must tell the reservationist their appointment time when making a reservation. This applies to their return trip as well. Our system then calculates the time needed to transport the individual to her/his destination. The reservationist will inform the caller of an available departure and return time.

AAR vehicles are scheduled to arrive within a 30-minute waiting period. For example, if you have a 9 AM pick-up time, the AAR vehicle should arrive between 9 AM and 9:30 AM. You must be at the pick-up spot at the beginning of the scheduled pick-up time and wait there for 30 minutes. The vehicle may arrive earlier than the scheduled pick-up time but must wait for a passenger at least until five minutes after the scheduled pick up time. When the driver arrives within or after the 30-minute waiting period, he/she will wait five minutes for the customer to appear. After waiting five minutes, the driver will leave.

AAR paratransit service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in New York City’s five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.) The fare on AAR is the same as the fare on local buses and subways (currently $2 one-way). It must be paid with exact change.

Like any AAR customer, a visitor (with or without a PCA) may travel with one guest. This arrangement must be indicated at the time the visitor requests a trip. The guest pays full fare; PCAs travel free of charge.
