5160.3 - Policy.

The Marana and Silver City Fire Caches are designated as Category I Fire Caches. Each cache has the responsibility to coordinate and supply equipment to a large geographic area on an Interagency basis. Category I Fire Caches shall meet the following criteria:

1. Actively participate in the Interagency Fire Cache Committee with objective of improving existing standards, developing new standards, and maintaining fire caches to established standards.

2. Ensure that properly maintained fire tools and equipment are available in sufficient amounts to meet planned needs for the normal fire year. Annually review stocking levels considering availability of fire equipment from Forests, other Regions, other Agencies, General Services Administration, and commercial sources.

3. Category I Fire Caches will honor all FFF orders on a year long basis. Orders are considered for both going fires and FFF authorized replacements (See FSH 6509.llk). Forests and other agencies are to order direct from Category I Fire Caches using forms R3-FS-5100-120A through -120C, Interagency Fire Cache Order Forms. Items not currently on hand at a Category I Cache will be ordered from other sources by the Category I Fire Cache, then supplied to ordering unit.

4. Orders for a 100 or 250 unit fire cache for an incident will be ordered direct from a Category I Fire Cache. The Category I Fire Cache will contact the Forest/Area Dispatch Office closest to the incident which maintains the unit fire cache, and request the cache to be dispatched. If available, the Forest/Area Category II Fire Cache will immediately dispatch the cache to the incident. The Category I Fire Cache will automatically replace the unit fire cache by sending the Category II Cache an identical cache unit. The incident will send all equipment and supplies to the closest Category I Fire Cache after the incident is over. Property items from the Category II Cache will be returned after reconditioning.

5. Category I Fire Caches are responsible for ensuring all fire tools and equipment are properly accounted for. Report any unusual or significant equipment losses to the Regional Office.
