Bibliographic Instruction Outline – Two One-Hour Sessions

Carl S. Swisher Library

Bethune-Cookman University

Daytona Beach, FL

Fall 2008/Spring 2009

DESCRIPTION: An educated person today is a citizen of the information age. Bibliographic knowledge is essential to success in college, in life and in the workplace. To assist with acquiring this status, students will attend a one-hour training session in bibliographic instruction in each of their first-year English classes (EN131 and EN132).

MAIN GOAL: In the first session, students will learn the basics of the library catalog and the library databases. In the second session, students will learn the basics of using library databases in conducting research.

REQUIREMENTS: In the first session, students will complete an integrated English and library assignment: writing an annotated bibliography. In the second session, students will complete another integrated English and library assignment: finding sources for a research paper. Students will complete additional assignments in Freshman seminar and in their English classes.

EVALUATION: Using a post-instruction survey at the end of the second session, the student will indicate that he or she understands at least 70% of the instructed skills. In addition to the information taught in the two library sessions, the survey will contain bibliographic items covered in Freshman Seminar and in their English classes.
