Interdisciplinary Connections: Math - pattern

Procedures:

  1. Talk to students about a career in jewelry. Talk about measurements.

    1. Show students how to do a half knot – two center strings (shorter?) are taped down to a loom or clipboard- lay the left string over the center two and the right one, take the right string and take it under the two center strings and through the loop created by the left string. Put the end of the left string through the loop created by the right string. Pull tight. Repeat the same steps, always with the left going on the top. This will make it twist.

    2. Show students how to do a square knot - two center strings (shorter?) are taped down to a loom or clipboard- lay the left string over the center two and the right one, take the right string and take it under the two center strings and through the loop created by the left string. Put the end of the left string through the loop created by the right string. Pull tight. Then take and lay the right string over the center two and the left one, take the left string and take it under the two center strings and through the loop created by the right string. Put the end of the right string through the loop created by the right string. Pull tight. Continue the steps – It is just starting with Left then Right then Left. This will keep the strings and knots flat.

  2. Have the students write their name on a Ziploc baggie in marker; so that the material and project can be stored.

  3. Show examples of student work. Have students select which style they would like to do.

  4. Students will measure and cut their strings.

  5. Students should fold them in half to find the centers of both strings and lay them side by side. They will knot them together making a ½” loop. Next they should attach their knot through the slot on a cardboard loom or clip board and tape down the two center strings.

  6. Students will begin making their knots. They may need to adjust some of the measurements to accommodate for smaller or larger wrists.

    1. For a beaded bracelet, students will make about six knots and then put a seed bead on each of the knotting strings and repeat the process.

    2. For a twist and flat bracelet, students will need one emphasis bead, and two regular sized beads. They will do the half knot for 1” – 2” and then do the square knot for 1 ½”. They will then string a regular bead on the center two strings, do a square knot, put on an emphasis bead, do a square knot, put on the regular bead and then do the square knot and half knot in reverse order.

    3. For a twisted bracelet, students will do the half knot for 3” – 4”. They will then string a regular bead on the center two strings, do a knot, put on an emphasis bead, do a knot, put on the regular bead, and then finish with the half knots for the same distance as the did in the beginning.

  7. When they get to the end, which will be about 6 ½” they will string a large bead onto all of the strings and knot the strings together. This will be what is threaded through the loop, so that students can clasp it on their wrist.

  8. Is students run out of time before the bracelet is finished have them put it in the Ziploc baggie. Have students finished the bracelet during the next class time.

  9. When students complete their bracelet, have them write their name on the piece of masking tape. Students should fold the tape over the raw end of the string (like a taco).

Evaluation:

Do the students know what the term pattern, half knot, square knot, and emphasis means?

Did students create a visually appealing memory wire bracelet?

Did the student follow the correct directions and measurements for their jewelry?

Did students measure correctly?
