H ow the Center Works
The SCC Writing Center is operated and staffed by the English Department and offers assistance to students—collectively and individually—who are struggling with some of the concepts and writing assignments in their composition classes. If you would like to take advantage of the Writing Center’s many services, you must enroll in the Writing Center course—English 098. It is a Credit/No Credit class for which you can earn .2 units. Here is what the course offers:
Small-group instruction/mini-lectures on common grammatical and structural problems
Computer-assisted learning with an easy-to-use program called PLATO to review mini-lecture topics with tutorials, practice tests, and mastery tests
One-on-one instruction from the professor on duty to discuss any or all of your specific papers’ problems
A t-home practice with exercises to review grammar, mechanics, and proper MLA format
How to Sign Up
In order to sign up for the course, you will have to do the following:
Use the add slip which is attached to this packet, fill in your name and ID number at the top, and ask your English instructor to sign it.
Then take the signed add card to the Admissions Office (1st floor of the E-building) to officially register.
Once you have enrolled, go to the Cashier’s Office (1st floor of the E-building) and pay a one-time $5 fee for the course.
When to Sign Up
Sign up dates are between Monday, February 6 and Friday, March 3, giving you a full month of class to determine if you will benefit from Writing Center instruction.
H ow to Complete the Course
In order to receive credit for the course, you will have to complete:
At least 5 full hours in the Writing Center
At least 4.6 hours of “homework” which must be done during times when the center is not open
TOTAL HOURS NEEDED FOR THE SEMESTER: 9.6
Information About Your 5 Writing Center Hours
You should arrive promptly at the beginning of the hour you wish to attend.
You must be sure to use the Success Center computer to sign in upon arrival and sign out upon departure, logging in with your student ID number under the English 098 ticket.
You must complete half of your hours before mid-semester and half after mid-semester (rather than squeezing all of them in during the final weeks).
You are allowed to attend more than 5 hours if you choose.
F ifteen minute mini-lectures will take place every Tuesday at 12:30PM and 4:00PM and every Wednesday at 2:00PM and 4:00PM. A schedule of lecture topics is located in this packet. You are encouraged to attend the lectures with topics you find to be unfamiliar or difficult. Following the lectures, you can
work on the WC Practice sheets which review the lecture
ask questions about your individual assignments
During hours when lectures are not scheduled, you can
work on self-selected practice sheets
use the Answer Keys in the File Boxes to correct and review your practice and homework sheets
use the PLATO program on the Success Center computers for computer-assisted learning. An explanation of PLATO is included in this packet.
check out the “Help Files” which are located in the same file box with the WC Practice sheets. These include various handouts from different English professors on all sorts of topics—like tidy comma rules, helpful transitional words, and effective research strategies. These sheets are available for you to take, study, and apply to your writing.
use the Success Center computers for research purposes. However, you can only access Internet sites which are relevant to your English assignments.
w ork with the Writing Center instructor individually to get assistance with specific assignments. Please do not expect the instructor to edit and proofread your papers.
If you are receiving extra credit for English 098, you should have a Task Report filled out by the Writing Center instructor for every hour attended. When you have completed all 5 hours, you should turn the reports into your English 60, 61 or 101 professor along with all of the practice and homework sheets you have done. A sample Task Report is included in this packet.
Information About Your 4.6 Homework Hours
These hours do not necessarily have to be done at home. They just have to happen during times when the Writing Center is not open for business—“off hours.” Here is how to fulfill them:
Complete Homework Practice Worksheets. These are in a separate file box from the “WC Practice Sheets.” One sheet will take approximately 15 minutes; therefore, 18 of them will suffice to meet the 4.6 requirement. A list of these worksheet topics is included in this packet. When you have completed and corrected all 18, be sure to show your work to the instructor on duty, so he or she may verify your completion. You will then have the sheets returned to you, so you can give them to your English professor.

USING PLATO
PLATO Learning, Inc. is the original educational software company, with a history of successful student outcomes. Its heritage of innovation dates back to 1963 and continues today as it leads the educational technology industry with a breadth and depth of software and services.
Its courseware includes thousands of hours of basic to advanced level instructional content for K-adult learners.
Each of you will be assigned a password to have access to PLATO. Once you are into the program, you will find it very easy to navigate. You can just click on the topics you wish to explore (those topics are listed on the next two pages) and then follow along with a tutorial, a practice test, and a mastery test. If you choose to work with PLATO frequently and complete many sections, you should print a report of your progress. This report can be submitted to your English instructor with all the other materials associated with English 98 (Task Reports, Practice sheets, Homework sheets).
As you go through the semester, be sure to fulfill the following requirements in order to receive CREDIT for the course. It would be helpful for you to keep all of your 098 materials in a separate folder which could then be given to your English instructor at the end of the semester:
Spend FIVE hours in the writing center (D209)—
Log in and out each time at the attendance computer
When you log out, view your total hours in the top right hand corner of the computer screen
Spread out your five hours; do not squeeze them all in during one week
Visit the center for more than 5 hours if wish
Collect TASK REPORTS each time you visit the center--
Be sure to ask the center’s instructor to fill out and sign these reports
Keep them all in your folder
Complete 18 HOMEWORK PRACTICE SHEETS outside of the writing center
Collect four at a time at the end of your visits to the center
Use the Answer Keys to correct them in the center
Keep them in your folder until you have done all 18
Show the 18 to the center’s instructor so she/he can verify your completion of the homework requirement
Return the sheets to your folder so you may turn them in to your English instructor
Celebrate! You’ve successfully completed Eng 098!
