Yemassee Indian Notes
located in the Low Country-the Coastal Zone near the Georgia border
ate shellfish-oysters, clams, mussels
fished in the oceans and rivers of the Low Country
warmer weather-homes were on the beach (wigwams)
colder weather-moved homes inland (wattle and daub)
men and women were farmers, hunters (men), and gathered nuts/berries
homes were round-covered with palmetto fronds (leaves)
Rivers
provided food/water for drinking
provided water for bathing and cooking
traveled by canoe to other villages to trade
Midden Mounds-ancient trash heaps consisting of broken bits of pottery and shells from the shellfish they ate. Many date back 4,500 years. There were some discovered at Edisto Beach.
Fun Fact: The Yemassee fled Florida to escape being forced into slavery by the Spanish who lived in the West Indies.
