THIS IS A SUMMARY OF THE DISCUSSION YOUR STUDENT REPS ON THE UNDERGRAD (SAM AND ANDY), GRADUATE, POST-GRADUATE AND RESIDENCY PROGRAMS HAD WITH DEANSHIP CANDIDATE DR. JACQUES BRADWEJN (CURRENT INTERIM DEAN OF MEDICINE.)
Major general goals: develop teaching environments at all levels, give a sense of direction and specificity, exhibit strong leadership, ensure professionalism and cohesion, strive towards excellence, making sure everyone is aware of their roles.
Undergraduate Medical Education (aka US)
Biggest accomplishment since being Dean here :
Restructuring the Faculty organizational chart, more specifically:
Going from 2 streams with 2 directors to a more parallel stream with one bilingual director
Re-evaluating the BAF and its role/authority/resources for the franco stream.
Challenges, things he wants to do:
Recruitment
Big challenge to recruit francophone teachers, especially with the Quebec Specialist strike (losing that pool of resources).
Goal is to build bigger teaching capacity for both streams
Preceptors:
Asked whether it would be considered to remunerate preceptors for their time in specialties where it is very difficult to get spots for students during clerkship – answer kind of vague but mentions a practice pad type of environment where there is special remuneration for clinical training, research (not currently adopted in Ottawa.)
225$ millions invested by government this year in theses types of programs so things should get better (obviously after we graduate).
Dean visibility (how do we get to know who he is since we don’t see him?)
Plan to be accessible/visible:
Know what is going on, what the problem areas are, have a good management team.
Meet with students reps (FYI – this has already been organized, your class reps + Mathieu will be meeting with him to discuss stage II issues in the near future – if you have input, email Andy or Sam)
His vision for Undergrad:
To make Ottawa U a place where you get excellent training, a pleasant learning environment with good role models.
To get a sense of your CAREER, not only a JOB.
Residency:
Feels that major issues are operational issues (aka specific learning objectives, accreditation)
Faculty role mainly divided through division chairs
His role : develop teaching curriculum, relationship with hospitals to get space for our students
Goal: Bridge gaps between the faculty and the CEO/Board Chairs of the hospitals
Does not feel he can formulate a proper educated answer concerning limited licensing for residents right now.
Graduate Studies:
Challenge: we’re currently in growth mode for all levels – major recruitment from teams and programs.
Big problem is that we do not have the infrastructure and space to accommodate our growth – mentions that money is present and that University as committed to build space.
Right now we have 2 new buildings in the works (1 for lab space, the other for offices) – a 3rd building will be coming for training and teaching.
Post-Doctoral Studies (RESEARCH Fellows)
Students find they have limited visibility
Would like more training opportunities and offer to teach basic science classes for FREE within CMM and Epi Depts (cannot do it for us since you need an MD to teach the medical students)
Dr. B supports their initiative to get more visibility, set up mentorship programs.
Last thing:
Also competing for other positions in Ottawa, final decision based final negotiations.
