3 Minutes of last meeting

Passed and signed

4 Matters Arising

a) Progress on car parking. Dr George reported that the car park question is still ongoing. A meeting to discuss this recently was cancelled, so go progress can be reported.

b) Progress of 111 Emergency Service. The 111 Service is now ‘live’ in our area. Some problems have been experienced regarding the questions which patients are asked in the initial contact. Questions have been asked as to and whether patients have been forwarded to the appropriate service for their needs, ie Out of Hours Service or recommending calling 999. Over-all people answering the 111 service do not have medical qualifications

The question was asked as to whether dissatisfaction with this service is responsible for the increase in 999 calls. However, Dr George said that it was in part due to the number of people calling 111 and being recommended to call 999.

5 Resignation and appointment

Regret was expressed that Ruth Holliday felt that she was no longer able to attend Committee meetings and so had resigned. Ruth was one of the original PPG members formed eight years ago. She has been a loyal member and she will be missed. Margaret Ridley was nominated to take her place and was voted on to the Committee.

6 VPPG Request for Doctors’ names

Apart from one member of the committee, satisfaction was expressed at the way the practice was being run by the new regime. The VPPG members were also supportive.

Disquiet was expressed by one member that it was still difficult to see the doctor of choice on any day, which led to some lively discussion. Dr George explained that some doctors only work in the practice on certain days of the week, even though they are permanent staff. Some are dividing their time between the Soham practice and CMC. Also, because of the tendency of doctors to want part-time work it is impossible to ensure that each doctor is available each day. Part-time doctors are usually members of the permanent staff. There are no particular specialist doctors, but Dr Williams has responsibility for contraception.

Dr Burnford supplied a list of the doctors at present in the practice, listed below. Doctors’ names will be placed on the website in the future.

Dr Helen Williams

Dr Alun George

Dr Sean Burrell

Dr Jo Shneerson

Dr Ruth Gallagher

Dr Richard Brixey (1 day a week)

Dr Gordon Irvine (1 day a week)

Dr Shahid Chaudrhy (leaving 24.2.14)

7 Implementation of new Department of Health Guidelines on the care of the elderly

Dr George reported that the practices at Soham and CMC were already committed to this ideal and had started the process. Because of the complexity of patient records, the computer system is unable to help. It is thus a case of laborious manual work to implement the requirements.

8 Keep Our NHS Public

Margaret Ridley reported her interest in the Keep Our NHS Public campaign. She asked whether leaflets could be displayed in the surgery advertising this. It was pointed out by Dr Burnford that, as the practice was being run under the procurement system, it would be difficult to allow this.

Margaret also brought 2 copies of the book NHS SOS for anyone interested. They were both taken.

There was some vociferous argument about this, as it was not strictly practice business. However, the opinion was also expressed that there are sometimes wider implications to be considered.

9 Review by Age UK

The Review by Age UK was brought to the attention of the committee and it was left to individual members to decide whether to take part.

10 Choice of hospital for treatment

The Doctors present agreed that there should be more awareness of the problems which could be caused by patients not realizing of the importance of the correct choice of clinic for initial treatment. This can tie the patient into either Hinchingbrooke or King’s Lynn for further treatment. Dr George pointed out that it is, in fact, opticians which who initially asked patients where they would prefer to go for further eye investigations.

11 Any Other Business

a) Dr George reported that CMC is being administered by the Practice Manager, with Jackie Spruce and Jill Alexander, mainly at Soham. However, Katrina Dunford has now been appointed Managerial Assistant at CMC and should be approached initially with administrative problems.

b) Lesley expressed confusion at the booking-in system, which asks patients to wait to be called by number. This does not happen at CMC but is part of the system which was installed. Patients are not called by number.

c) Dr Burnford said that a Care Quality Commission inspection is to take place soon. The practice will be given 2 days’ notice and representatives of the PPG were to be invited to take part. Jane and Allan volunteered to be available

12 Date of next meeting

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, 9th April at 7.00 pm at the Surgery.
