Out of hours emergencies

01223 870250 0r 0330 123 9131

We endeavour to make it easy for you to see the doctor or nurse. Patients with urgent problems can always be seen on the same day. Drs Allen, Gee & Ferrier are full time. Dr Richards is three quarters time.

When you register with our surgery you can normally choose which doctor you wish to see. For urgent appointments it may not always be possible for you to see the doctor of your choice.

We have wheelchair access at the surgery. There’s a doorbell at the entrance doors to the surgery, please ring and we will gladly help you, alternatively please ring in advance or let us know when you book an appointment that you would like assistance and we’ll be there to assist on your arrival.

We have a hearing loop and Isabelle Hoy is here to help with signing. Please speak to the receptionist if you need help.

Out of hours emergencies are covered by a co-operative of doctors (Urgent Care Cambridge).

If you telephone the surgery out of hours your call will be automatically transferred to URGENT CARE CAMBRIDGE. At the co-operative a trained operator will take your message and ask the doctor to ‘phone you back to give advice, arrange for you to be seen at the emergency surgery at Chesterton Hospital, Union Lane, Cambridge, or organise for a doctor to visit you as appropriate.

Practice Nurse: Karen Hoy.

We also have a Phlebotomy clinic most mornings

The practice nurse is available to carry out the following:-

Special Services

New Patient Health Checks

We would like to meet all new patients who have recently registered with the practice so that we can make a note of your past medical problems, current medication and future needs, as well as for example, checking your blood pressure.

Temporary Residents

If your visitors normally live outside the area and need to see a doctor we can provide this service.

Contraception

The nurses and doctors are able to advise on all aspects of contraceptive care. You should ask to see Dr Ferrier if you wish to have a coil fitted.

Cervical Smears

There is a computerised recall system for cervical smears which are generally taken every three years for women aged 25 -49 and every five years thereafter unless there are problems. Either a doctor or a nurse can take a smear for you. It is as well to make a note of when your smear is next due. You will be informed of your result by post.

Diabetic clinic

These are run by Dr Allen on a Wednesday morning twice monthly. All patients with diabetes are offered a check at least annually.

Asthma clinics

These are run by Nurse Karen Hoy in conjunction with Dr Gee. We aim to see all asthmatic patients at least once a year.

Travel Clinics

Nurse Karen Hoy is our travel nurse specialist. For all your travel needs please book an appointment with Nurse Hoy.

We are an accredited Yellow Fever Centre.

Minor Surgery

Removal of "lumps and bumps" under local anesthetic, and freezing of warts is carried out by Drs Allen and Gee. Please make an ordinary appointment first so that we can plan the best treatment.

Pregnancy care

This is usually undertaken by the midwife on Tuesday afternoons from 2.00 - 4.30pm. If this is not convenient you can be seen in normal surgery hours by a doctor.

Post natal examinations and baby checks

These are carried out when the baby is eight weeks old. The first set of immunisations will be given at the same time. Please ask for a "post natal appointment"

.

Child Health Surveillance

Regular developmental checks for children under five are done in conjunction with the Health Visitor. The exact form and frequency of these is currently changing. Please telephone the Health Visitor on (01763) 262861 for advice.

Physio Direct

Patents needing NHS physiotherapy can phone 01480 434980 and book an appointment.

District Nursing

The community nurses are available to help with nursing house-bound patients. They can be contacted on (01223) 846122 from 8am – 4pm

01603 481205 from 4pm – 6pm.

Community Psychiatric Nursing

A referral to the community psychiatric nurses can be made through the doctor.

Non NHS work (reports, certificates, etc.)

We have to make a charge for non-NHS services. The charges are set by the British Medical Association. Please ask the receptionist how much you will be asked to pay.

Dispensary

Dispensary patients can obtain their medicines directly from the surgery.

Repeat prescriptions should be requested no less than 48 hours in advance by:

via the village box system which operates on Monday and Thursday in the following villages: Hauxton, Thriplow, Foxton, Barrington, Haslingfield & Fowlmere. (If you pay for your prescriptions please send the correct money/cheque with the request)

Practice Manager

The practice manager, Mrs Gerry O’Leary, is responsible for the smooth running of the practice. If you have any suggestions or problems please contact her by phone or letter at the practice, or in person by appointment. The doctors are of course happy to discuss any problems associated with your medical care. If you would like further information on our Publication Scheme or Complaints Procedure, leaflets are available upon request.

This information will be shared only with necessary professionals to ensure good quality care. In all other circumstances other than when there is a legal requirement to disclose information, personal health information will only be disclosed with the explicit consent of the patient.
