Test passage

Read the test passage, and complete a graphic organizer. Then reread the passage, and add more ideas to your organizer.

James Marshall was a builder who lived in California. One morning, he found a few tiny nuggets of gold. Soon after, more men found gold nearby. The year was 1848.

There was gold to be had in California. The news spread fast, and the California Gold Rush began. People came from all over the world. They hoped to strike it rich.

Native Americans in California had known about the gold for years. Gold had no value to them. They valued other natural objects more.

The journey was long for those who did want the gold. It was difficult to get to California. There were no railroads. People were forced to travel by ship or covered wagon. Many people traveled for eight or nine months to reach California. Some people did strike it rich. Other people got there too late, and much of the gold had been mined.
