Third World Dodgeball
We divided our group into two groups. One group with most people (this represents a third world country such as Africa) and on the other team we had very few people (this represented a rich country such as Canada). Throughout the game we read out facts, and the large team could only use one color of balls (there were only 4) and the small team could use any color. When balls came onto Africa's side that they could not use, Canada could come and take them and could not be hit. As Africa could retrieve theirs but could be hit. When someone was hit, they were considered to have died of starvation and had to leave the court. If they caught a ball, the person threw it would be out (Canada could bring back a player) but Africa couldn't (because of health care). The Canadian gets unfair advantages. It was really powerful and people realized that we have much more and how we don't share it.
Meal That Those We're Feeding Would Eat
Category: Breaking the Fast
What I have done the past few years, I've gone online and found meals that people in Africa would eat (such as sudza or rice) and cooked them for the kids, giving them a greater appreciation of what they have and who they're feeding.
Testimonies as Tickets to Break-Fast Meal
Category: Breaking the Fast
Our youth wrote testimonies as their ticket to the break-fast meal. We were amazing at what an impact the 30 Hour Famine had on the youth. They were really moved by the experience. They learned to appreciate what they have and realize what others do not have. It brought all the adults to tears and still does everytime we read them. This is why we all do this, to have an impact on young people so that they will make a difference in this world.
Constructing Crosses or Picture Collages
We did this also and it was a very powerful message. We cut pictures out from World Vision and other magazines of children suffering from poverty and we put date below the picture. Ex: 1/1/2001 - date of famine,04/15/2004 -date of famine, etc with all dates ending on the day of our famine. We had tried for thousands, not sure how many we actually made but it coverered the whole city block that our church is on. We also had a big sign reading "In memory of all the children who will die today because of hunger. it was enough however because People cried when they stood and looked at it, which were many as it was election Day and our church is a place to vote.

A Servant Attitude
Category: Breaking the Fast
Each year as the famine comes to an end, we have a meal of rice to ease back into digestion. The only catch is that there are rules. These rules are simple. 1)You may not serve yourself. 2) You may not ask for anything to eat or drink. The idea is that each member of the group must look out for the other members. Instead of focusing on ourselves as we finally get to eat, we must stay focused on those around us or they may never get to eat. The kids respond to this well and it seems a great way to bring the famine to a close, by continuing to serve each other.
Fingerprint Banner
Category: Famine Activities
We are taking a roll of paper & having kids put a fingerprint for each dollar raised, with the phrase "ONE FINGERPRINT = ONE DOLLAR = ONE CHILD FED ONE DAY". The banner will be displayed at the Fellowship Potluck that breaks our fast. You could alternatively have each fingerprint represent a child dying of hunger-related causes that day--29,000 is the current estimate.
NOTE FROM THE FAMINE STAFF: This can also be done with links in a chain, hand- or finger prints, paper clips, or any number of other things can be used to represent the 29,000 children who die each day. Any visual you create can have a huge impact on those who see it and hear your witness about what your group is doing about hunger.
Light our world
Category: Famine Activities
Turn the lights off in room. Each youth gets a candle. All stand in a circle and take turns praying for the world, the needy, the lost, other famine participants, etc. As each person prays, they light the candle of the person next to them, then they pray, until everyone's candle is lit. Leader speaks about how it is our duty to be the light of the world and help others in need. Each person then tells the rest what they are thankful for until all have spoken. we can blow out the candles every 3 seconds representing how every 3 seconds a child dies from hunger.
