Job Title: Disaster Risk Management Advisor

Reports to: Team Leader

(Dhading Disaster Response Programme)

Location: DDRP Office, DhadingBesi, with frequent travel to field locations.

Objective of the Job: Ensure disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation activities in the Dhading Disaster Response Programme (DDRP) are effective best practice by providing technical advice, training, coaching and other capacity building support to UMN partners and staff.

Qualification & Experience

  • Assist Dhading Disaster Response Programme (DDRP) management to implement effective best practice on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in DDRP ensuring Global Humanitarian Standards are met.

  • Lead set up and maintenance of DDRP’s disaster preparedness plans and procedures with formation and train Community Disaster Management Committees and various task groups, equip them with Light Search and Rescue equipment and ensure early warning system in place.

  • Train, coach and mentor partner and UMN staff involved in DRR and CCA activities

  • Assist UMN and partner DRR staff in preparing timely professional reports.

  • Work with UMN’s Monitoring and Evaluation team in monitoring progress of the disaster risk reduction indicators of the DDRP.

  • Liaise with Integral Mission Officer to assist with DRR-related church mobilisation work.

  • Sensitively develop and build relationships with civic society, local government, communities and church leaders involved in disaster risk reduction in DDRP target VDCs.

  • Remain up to date on issues relating to hazards and disaster management in Nepal, and on best practices globally, including representing UMN at disaster management forums and meetings at district level.

  • Assist with supervision of UMN and partner staff assigned to implement disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation activities to ensure quality work and high impact.

  • Contribute to local and global learning in climate change and disaster management by ensuring that good practices at all levels are captured, well documented and disseminated.

  • Advise UMN DDRP and partner management on decisions in disaster risk reduction and CCA in DDRP.

  • Give technical input into the disaster risk reduction and CCA component of the DDRP Annual Plan.

  • Analyse risk assessments and make recommendations on suitable DRR and CCA activities.

  • Degree (masters preferable) in disaster/risk management, development or a related subject.

  • Relevant experience in risk management and assessment.

  • Several years experience in a community-focussed disaster management role, preferably in Nepal.

  • Experience in delivering climate change and disaster risk reduction training.

  • Experience in working with a national or international NGO is desirable.
