School Delay or Cancellation
Great Bay Charter School will strive to have class on campus whenever conditions make it possible and safe to do so. As tenants of the Exeter Region Cooperative School District, our ability to hold classes on campus is largely influenced by the status of ERCSD schools for weather-related events. Generally speaking the following guidelines will apply:
If ERCSD cancels due to weather conditions, GBCS classes will be cancelled on campus, but Storm School will be active. (See below.)
If ERCSD has a 2-hour delay, GBCS will be delayed as well. Morning meeting will begin at 9:40. SST mid-session students should go right to their programs for the 9:30 start.
The notification of a delay or cancellation, along with the status of Storm School will be sent to the GBCS Community via our School Messenger alert system (phone and email message) as soon as the decision has been made. An announcement is also posted on WMUR Channel 9 and will appear under Great Bay eLearning Charter School (our original school account name). Please note that it often takes several minutes from the receipt of the SAU 16 announcement to getting the GBCS announcement out to our community.
We recognize that Great Bay Charter School students come from a broad geographic area consisting of many different communities. Weather conditions at home (or on the roads) may be far different than the greater Exeter area upon which the decision to hold school is based. In the event of a storm event when school is open or delayed, we encourage parents to make the determination of conditions in their area and make the ultimate decision based upon the safety of their student(s). If the student will be out of school due to weather/travel conditions, please notify the office.
Storm School Procedures for 2018-2019
Introduction
Storm School is an alternative school day protocol that our school uses in the event of a typical winter weather cancellation. This program allows us to hold scheduled school activities with interaction available between students and staff. It is critical that students participate throughout the morning as attendance is recorded. Students must participate in order for us to count the day!
Assignments are given through Google Classroom and are integrated into each teacher’s class assessment. The intent is for them to be completed during the block with teachers available to interact with students electronically should they need assistance. If the assignments are take a bit longer than the scheduled time, students should pause their work at the end of the scheduled block and move on to their next class.
We appreciate your cooperation and participation with Storm School in order to maintain this unique program. We used it five times last school year and received a significant benefit by keeping school moving throughout the stormy winter. It had very positive feedback from staff and students.
General Information:
Mr. Stackhouse will alert the school community when school is canceled on campus and will inform you of our Storm School status via his School Messenger phone/email message.
It is anticipated that Storm School would be held on a normal weather cancellation day unless there are widespread storm-based power or connectivity issues known to us.
Attendance is recorded and assignments collected throughout the schedule. Students are expected to interact with their teachers throughout the morning.
Schedule:
Advisory: Check in with Advisor between 8:15-8:30AM
A1: 8:30-8:55
A2: 9:00-9:25
B1: 9:30-9:55
B2: 10:00-10:25
C1: 10:30-10:55
C2: 11:00-11:25
Students:
Log into Google Classroom at the scheduled time and respond to the question of the day. This process records your class attendance and participation.
Make sure to complete the given assignment or communicate with your teacher if you need an extension. The goal is to work on the assignment within the time allotted for each class. If you need additional time, please pause at the end of the block and move on to the next class.
Attendance on Storm School days is required of all students. If too ill, or an appointment prevents participation, parents must communicate absences to the office just like any other school day.
Failure to check in results in an unexcused absence and will be treated in the same manner as a physical school day. Storm School assignments will be applied toward class grades like other assignments or project artifacts.
Students with long-term Internet access issues at home should inform their advisors so hard copies can be sent home in anticipation of a Storm School day.
Students who have other unavoidable responsibilities at home during the morning must check in with their advisor in the morning of a Storm School day to be considered present. The class work may be completed later in the day.
SST classes are not held during storm school.
Parents
If your student is too ill or has an appointment and cannot participate, please notify the GBCS office as you would on a normal school day. Students check in with advisors between 8:15 and 8:30 and we use this check-in for daily school attendance. Students are also required to check in with each teacher throughout the morning via their questions of the day and can interact with him/her electronically beyond that as needed.
If you have connectivity issues at home and the student cannot participate, please notify the GBCS office that your student is participating using hard copies.
If you have any questions, as always, please call our office at 775-8638.
Note: It is expected that the Great Bay Charter School office will be open unless unsafe travel prevents staff from making it in. In the event of an office closure, we will process your voicemail communications remotely throughout the morning or as soon as we reopen.
