COMPARISONS
In Spanish, as in English, comparative constructions are used to compare things , people or places with one another. When comparing the quality of one thing to that of another, there are 3 possibilities: more than, less than, and equal.
Comparisons of equality (=)
Comparing with adjectives.
English equivalent = as…as.
tan + adjective * + como
Note: Adjectives need to agree in # and gender with the subject.
Ex. At PHS, el fútbol americano es tan popular como baloncesto
At Pope HS, football is as popular as basketball.
Comparing with nouns.
English equivalent = “as much/ many as”.
Tanto(o, os, as)* + noun + como
Note: tanto (o, os, as) need to agree in # and gender with the noun.
Ex. Hay tantas chicas como chicos en el club de español.
There are as many girls as boys in the Spanish club.
Comparisons of Inequality
Comparing with adjectives.
a. greater than, more than. English equivalent = “-er”.
más + adjective * + que
b. lesser, less than. English equivalent = “-er”.
menos + adjective * + que
Note: Adjectives need to agree in # and gender.
Ex. Las chicas son más inteligentes que los chicos
The girls are more intelligent than the boys.
Ex. Su computadora es menos cara que la computadora de Paul
His
computer is less expensive than Paul’s computer.
Irregular adjectives
better = mejor + que
worse = peor + que
*older = mayor + que
*younger = menor + que
Ex. La clase de espanol es mejor que la clase de matématicas.
The Spanish class is better than math class.
Ex. Ana es menor que Elena.
Ana is younger than Elena.
